My wife fell victim to some social engineering the other day via telephone and typed a PIN into the PCCare247.com website, giving the other party access to our computer...or, I should say, three of our computers (yes, they got her to go from computer to computer). When they brought up what looked like a ton of viruses on the screens and scared her...then told her they could fix it for $500 a computer...she called me at work. I had her disconnect and turn off all the computers. I spent a couple hours last night trying to run various rootkit detection and removal programs and antivirus programs. I am no longer coming up with any hits from these programs, but when I run my NIS 2012 scan, I now always get the same results: 18 Tracking Cookies were fully resolved. Looking at the results, it specifies that 17 tracking cookies were not detected and one orphan cleanup was removed. I can run this scan again, without ever opening a browser, and get the same results. I rebooted: same results. I am concerned my NIS 2012 was damaged and that my system is still at risk. Any suggestions on what to do next? I dread the though of reloading three computers but realized that may be the final solution...
