Norton Internet Security forced update fails to activate

Yesterday Norton Internet Security forced a popup on my Windows 7 64-bit desktop that I needed to reboot in order for an update to take effect and continue protecting my machine.  Upon reboot, NIS shows up in the task manager with a red "X" declaring that "Your trial has expired" and to click the "Activate Now" button.  Upon pressing the "Activate Now" button my machine goes in an infinite loop of declaring the following and going back to the initial "Your trial has expired" screen:

Unable to Proceed

We were unable to complete activation of your upgraded product. Try again by clicking Activate Now in the main window of your product. (-1010)

I spent an hour waiting to chat with customer support yesterday and they said it should be fixed in 24 hours, and it is not.  My renewal is due in two weeks, and after this experience I am very much considering moving on to another product after being a loyal Norton customer for the last seven years.  I have a three PC license and am afraid to turn any of the other PC's on for fear of being assaulted into this "upgrade".

The case ID for the chat session yesterday is [Removed].
