Whenever I run a scan with Norton Internet Security 2009, it stops half-way into the scan, and tells me "Norton Internet Security has encountered an internal program error." and Windows gives me an error screen saying "Symantec Service Framework has stopped working."
After I have gone through these two errors, the scan says "The scan encountered an error." and stops immediately. Then I close the windows, and try to open the Norton Control Panel again. It does not open, at all. Yet, the Norton tray icons still remain, and the Norton Home sidebar utility remains.
My Specs:
HP Pavilion SE
Windows Vista Home Premium x64
5GB of RAM
I am using the Norton Internet Security 2009 that came pre-installed on the system.
I also have another computer, a Dell Inspiron E1505 running Windows XP Media Center 2005, that does not experience this issue.
I read another thread where a guy was having this same problem, but did not report on the "Norton Internet Security has encountered an internal program error" part of it; I am not sure if this situation is identical to his or not.
The accepted solution was to: "...Uninstall and wait for the updated release."
Well, I don't want to have to uninstall, if I don't have to.
Windows Vista is already hard enough to work with as it is.
So, if the only working solution is to uninstall it, I will probably just use Norton 360 v2.0 and never get Norton Internet Security again.
According to the screen shot that NIS 2008 not 2009. Also Ad-Aware uses a backround service and the program itself it usless in todays world. Try upgrading to NIS 2009 and uninstall Ad-Aware.
First run LiveUpdate repeatedly from Norton 2008 program until you see the message that no more updates are available. Then disable the scan in active program files and compressed files. When the file is active ,that is when it is in use it will be difficult to scan as it may affect the applications. Now if a compressed file in damaged,Norton modules will not be able to decompress it and then run a scan. So disabling them will help you to complete the scan.
Please delete the temporary windows files and prefetch folder, then check for the issue. 1. Click Start > Run. 2. Type %temp% and click OK. 3. The Windows Temporary folder will open up. 4. Delete all files and folders present there. You may not be able to remove all files as some may be currently used by Applications running in your computer. 5. Restart the computer and delete the remaining files. 6. Navigate to C:\windows\prefetch folder and delete the files present there..
Then try to run a scan. If the scan again fails, make a note of the file(location of the files) at which Norton program gives the error message.Let us know the results.
The NIS upgrader only upgrades me to 2009, which I do not want.
I found out that the scan crashes when it is scanning any directory within the Unreal Tournament 3 program files folder. I am going to try uninstalling and scanning. If it doesn't crash when I don't have Unreal Tournament 3 installed, I am going to see if there may be a patch to fix that.
