Norton Internet Security is blocking Google Chrome

I tried to load a page on Chrome again after my last post. It seems as if I had a burst of luck; I was able to load Facebook as well as eBay for about 20 seconds before getting stuck again.

I will keep trying but reseting the firewall may have helped.

Thank you.

I am having the same problem and have attempted the solutions listed here and still have no success. This is a recent problem.

Seems like it's a popular thing, yet no one is here to help.

Hi, I am having the same problem and have gone as far as re-installing Window, NIS, and Chrome.  I spoke with the technical support folks and gave them recreateable examples of the frozen target web page, then disabling the Norton Identity Protection extension, and it works fine afterward.  It is a definite bug and It is really a pain to have to either disable and re-enable the extension each time or use another browser.  I am hoping that some of the developers are monitoring this forum because troubleshooting this issue I fear might be beyond what offshore support might have access to.

I too am having issues.  Chrome was working just fine, but now displays just the gray page.  Uninstalled Chrome, reinstalled and nothing. The Norton shield is on the Chrome icon, so something is blocking?  I've also reset my firewall with no change to using Chrome.

Help!!

I too just ran into this problem on two computers within the same day!!! Both worked fine then just quit. I do remember Java installing on both as an update! It did this yesterday updating Java to 7U11 Maybe check Java settings to see if that works or uninstall java to see if it works. I will be doing some testing today and will write back when and if found any thing!!

**Here is an update**

I did try and do a few things one was disabled NIS Identity Safe just for a little bit and than NIS Firewall which has allowed both computers to use Google Chrome. Then I went in an used live update from the control panal of NIS 2013 and one computer had to restart but this one did not but I restarted it any how. Then Google Chrome is working. Then I re-enabled NIS Identity Safe.! Well hope this helps! Bye.**

I forgot to add the option to turn off Application blocking altogether. That solves the access issue, but weakens the security of your computer.

I use Norton Internet Security (NIS) on a MacBook Pro running Mac OS X. Not sure how the UI on a Mac differs from that on a Windows PC, but my description will apply to the Mac. My reason for addressing this issue is that I too have encountered this problem and searched far and wide online for a solution. Norton support was not helpful. Various forums did not offer specific ways to solve my problem. And in fact I have been experiencing this problem on-and-off for about three months (starting February 2017). This problem relates to Norton and Chrome needing to be on the same page with respect to definitions and code. If one changes, the other must change to match it. That doesn't always happen automatically or seamlessly.

I take three steps to try to resolve the problem of Norton not allowing Chrome to connect to the Internet. As far as I can tell, the sequence of these steps is inconsequential. However, I do them in this order.

  1. Choose NIS settings
    • Open the NIS program
    <ul>
    	<li>From the menu of Security, Scans, LiveUpdate, and Advanced, choose Advanced</li>
    </ul>

    <ul>
    	<li>In the Advanced menu, I see Protect My Mac, Firewall, Safe Web, Activity, and Product Settings. Choose Firewall.</li>
    </ul>

    <ul>
    	<li>Under FireWall, I see Application Blocking, Connection Blocking, Vunerability Protection, Location Awareness, and DeepSight. Turn on all of these.</li>
    </ul>
    </li>
    <li>Uninstall and reinstall Chrome
    <ul>
    	<li>On a Mac it is easy to uninstall and reinstall software. Just go to your applications folder. Find the application you want to uninstall and move it to trash.</li>
    </ul>

    <ul>
    	<li>This does not remove the log of your settings, just the software. So, when you reinstall, Chrome will look and feel like it did before, because it uses the preferences and bookmarks stored in your Library.</li>
    </ul>

    <ul>
    	<li>Drag and drop the Chrome app to the trash.</li>
    </ul>

    <ul>
    	<li>Empty trash.</li>
    </ul>

    <ul>
    	<li>Go online using a different browser, search for "Download Google Chrome"</li>
    </ul>

    <ul>
    	<li>Download and reinstall Chrome.</li>
    </ul>
    </li>
    <li>Set NIS to allow Chrome to access the Internet
    <ul>
    	<li>Go back to the main menu and navigate to Application Blocking again (Main menu--/Advanced menu--/FireWall--/Application Blocking)</li>
    </ul>

    <ul>
    	<li>In the Application Blocking screen, near the bottom are three options. Check the box next to each of these.</li>
    </ul>

    <ul>
    	<li>At the very bottom of the Application Blocking screen is a button "Reset to Defaults." Click this button to reset NIS settings. This should clear the list of applications in the middle of the Application Blocking screen.</li>
    </ul>

    <ul>
    	<li>In the middle of the Application Blocking screen under the list of applications are three action buttons: Search, Add Application, Remove. Choose Add Application. This opens the list of applications on your computer.</li>
    </ul>

    <ul>
    	<li>From the list, select Google Chrome and click on Choose. This should add Chrome to the list of applications that NIS allows to access the Internet.</li>
    </ul>

    <ul>
    	<li>At the top of the list of applications, the right-hand column is labeled "Setting." Next to Google Chrome, you should see "allow." If it says "block", click on the arrow to the right of the term and select "allow."</li>
    </ul>
    </li>

Next time you load Chrome, NIS may give you a warning message asking whether you want to allow this application to access the Internet. If so, choose "Allow." This works for a number of days, then stops working, and I have to redo it again, which is a pain. But, as far as I know, this is the process for fixing this problem.
