I just purchased an HP dv7-7047cl laptop that came preloaded with NIS 2012. For some reason, the NIS Service is set to Automatic (Delayed Start) in the Services Control Panel. I have another HP Laptop that is not set this way and my desktop that I built and am writing this from is also not set this way and is running NIS 2012. They are set to Automatic and not, Automatic(Delayed Start).
It is grayed out so I can't set it to Automatic. Why is this done this way and how can I change it? I like knowing it is working properly immediately. I don't understand why this new laptop has it set with a delayed start and it is the 1st time I have seen this set this way on any PC I have installed NIS on in the past. It may not make a difference, but I want to see the Norton icon in the tray after startup and I believe I should be able to at least change it to Automatic instead of it having the delayed start.
You will have to log into your computer with an admin account. Click Settings - Real Time Protection. Click on the green slider beside Enable Boot Time Protection until Normal or Aggressive is displayed. Click on the '?' beside this to see what the different settings do. Click Apply or OK and check it it works the way your are expecting.
The reason you cannot change the setting in Services, is that Norton is protecting itself from malware trying to disable your protection. If you need to make changes like this, you would have to turn off Norton Tamper Protection in settings. You should only do this if you are sure you know what you are doing, like if you are instructed by one of the Gurus here.
Thanks for the reply. I set it to aggressive and it did change the NIS Service to Automatic, but it still took 2.5 mins to load. I tried multiple restarts. I finally uninstalled NIS with setting removals and then ran the latest Removal Tool. I then installed the 15 day trial version from the NIS download web page. After getting it fully updated, and doing a restart, it loaded like it does on my other HP laptop and my current custom built PC.
Thanks for giving it a shot. I hate these manufactures that fix things(not really) to run the way some know-it-all DECIDES they think it should be run. They need to drop PC from the description because the "personal" refers to the 'personnel' at the manufacturer deciding how they want the PC you own to run. It's time to standardize a laptop case so the consumer build them themselves if they choose.
FOR GOODNESS SAKES! DUMP THE CAPTCHA ALREADY!!!!!!! (not directed at anyone personally, but at the forum site in general)
I had to give up trying to post this reply early this morning because I wasn't getting the ignorant Captcha entries right, and I believe that I was. I kept trying to find one I could make out and even they apparently weren't correct. I understand the reason for it, but Captcha is crap! There has to be a better way that doesn't effect people who don't go around spamming.
Once again, good, honest people get screwed over the by the behaviors of Jacka$$es, with rules that just don't work. The Captcha shouldn't have to be so messed up to be able to identify.
When you tried aggressive, did you also try normal? That will cut down a little on the time it takes at system start.
The captcha is a little annoying at the beginning, but if you are still hanging around here, it should dissappear soon. Not sure of the exact number of posts you need to disable it.

No, I didn't. I read the descriptions about the differences and wanted the most secure protection for my college bound son's laptop. I saw it changed the Service to Automatic(without the Delayed Start) and figured it was an HP issue, which I believe it still is. They're going to get people thinking Norton is returning to pre-2009 version performance degradation.
Thanks for showing me about the settings for this Peter. I always like learning something new, and I did!
