Norton Internet Security Update

Norton is prompting me today (13/05/10) to upgrade to the latest NIS (my current version is 19.9.1.14). When I start the process however it shows a screen entitled "Application Compatibility Check" and asks me to remove the programme "Dell Data Protection | Access" before proceeding. I don't really want to remove a manufacturer's programme which has been happily residing alongside the existing NIS installation. My questions:

Why does it ask for this and what would the consequences be if I followed the instruction and deleted it?

What would the consequences be if I ignored the instruction and proceeded with the upgrade?

ghjbox,

I had to look up what that Dell application is and here's a link to help others

http://www.dell.com/Learn/us/en/04/campaigns/dell-data-protection-solutions?c=us&l=en&s=bsd

Hang on for some more informed comment than I can give but it it is a pure encryptation system then I don't think it would interfere withe Norton Security in the way that another security application could.

However Norton while would not be able to check inside the encrypted vault it would check files before they were placed inside and also when brought out into unencrypted form.

Let's see if I can drum up some informed thoughts on this and what the significance of the warning is -- it might just mean what I've said above and be suggesting that if you unencrypt everything then Norton can check it and it would be safe to put back into encrypted form ......

Do you use the functions of this software? ie have you encrypted your drive or files? If not, it probably would not hurt to uninstall it. If you do use it and you uninstall, you could lose access to your files or drives.

Ignoring the warning and continuing with the upgrade could compromise either the Dell software or your NIS protection. This could be a false positive, just like the current issue with the Free version of Malwarebytes being flagged as incompatible.

You might want to wait until a Norton employee, (names in bold red letters) can comment. Hugh has asked for help for you.

Im also on version 19.9.1.14, and  it offered me the update as well.  Two questions:

1.  Why are we being offered the update, given that Tony Weiss' 4-8-13 sticky post said you need to currently have 20.x to get it?

2.  I turned it down because I don't feel like re-doing any custom settings at the moment.  In particular, re-entering my custom firewall rules is always kind of time-consuming.  Can someone confirm that these will indeed have to be re-entered, as with previous upates?

3.  Has the 2012, 2013 etc, nomenclature been abandonded?

Thanks.

Ardmore,  if you have a current subscription you can upgrade to the latest version, for free. Year dates have been discontinued, in favour of version numbers. The current version is V 20.3.1.22. You can retain the Local Identity Safe if you do an overinstall of your version, plus you will retain your settings. Run Live Update, until advised no further updates are available. Good luck.

Thanks for the info FRE.  Are you pretty sure that my custom firewall rules for specific programs (in Smart Firewall/Program Control/Configure)  would be preserved as well?  Those have always disappeared before, even in an overinstall.

BTW, I see now that my original post said "Two questions: 1, 2 and 3."  Oops. :manembarrassed:

When updating, Norton should give you the option of retaining your current settings. :smileyhappy:

This is very strange Norton never ask to uninstall a program. So i will give only one suggestion to you you discuss this problem with your " Antivirus Service " team.

BTW, sorry, I didn't mean to start injecting off topic questions into the thread.  I just saw the first line, "Norton is prompting me today (13/05/10) to upgrade to the latest NIS (my current version is 19.9.1.14)," thought "same here," and started posting my questions. ghjbox's issue seems very unusual and I'll be interested to hear what the Norton folks have to say.  You would think there could be many other Dell owners encountering the same issue.

Hi Ardmore,

To the best of my knowledge the Firewall Rules are not saved and carried forward to the new install.  This has been a thorn in many folks side for a long time and has been the subject of discussion on the Product suggestion Board.

This is something I dug out of some info I have saved from Norton:

The user-defined settings of the core components do not migrate, and the product default prevails after an up upgrade, however I do believe ID Safe will migrate with the RnRT method.  I know the firewall rules do not for sure. The core components are:

■ Auto-Protect

■ SONAR

■ Smart Firewall

■ Identity Safe

How about a reinstall versus an upgrade?

When I had to reinstall NIS 2013 due to corruption, I uninstalled it. It as me if I would be reinstalling and I said yes, Appears it does indeed save all your settings. When I downloaded the latest release and installed from my Norton account, all my settings were restored including the firewall ones. Don't know about identiy safe since I don't use it.

Thanks, yank.  That sure seems in line with my previous experience with the program control section of the firewall.  When I updated to 19 NIS seem to retain more of my non-firewall customizations than in the past, yet the the program rules all went away as usual, to be rebuilt from scratch as each program was accessed.  This is why I have to save a record of all my "core" firewall program rules and then go in and manually re-add them with each update to a new version.  It's kind of tedious, and I always wonder why these program rules can't be preserved with an overlay install -- or at least backed up to some kind of configuration file that could be re-loaded after the update.

donziehm, it's interesting that your experience seems to differ.  I wonder if there is something different about your system, or some nuance to the way you do the updates?

To the people being offered the upgrade, are you saying it is trying to upgrade you to version 20?
Do you have the setting for find program upgrade turned on or off?

Yes, I was offered an upgrade to 20 a few days ago (no offers since).  I declined it because I didn't want to have to re-do my firewall custom program rules just yet.  I'll just manually check for updates when I'm ready to spend some time re-inputting the rules.  Not sure which on-off setting you're referring to for finding program upgrades, unless perhaps it is "Special Offer Notification," which I've left at the default of On.

There is a on/off toggle for something to the effect of notify me of product upgrade
Just wondering if you left that on and that is why you got the notification

Back on topic -- the message to uninstall the Dell Data Protection is by design, as we have determined there are compatibility issues between the products. I hope that clarifies the situation. Thanks.
