I purchased Norton Internet Security in 2010, do I need to purchase Norton Anti virus too? ...I thought the antivirus was in the NIS package.
adamsp28 Hi,
I assume that you've just started using your NIS 2010.
No, you have the antivirus included in the package, already. It is never recommended to run two security programs at the same time, anyway.
Also, I would suggest that you update to the latest version, 2011, which is free to you during your current subscription, which runs from the date on which you started using the program.
Enjoy,
drshlomo.
See here for the difference between the different Norton products: http://us.norton.com/products/charts/comparison.jsp?pcid=mp
Basically, Norton Internet Security have all the features of Norton AntiVirus plus additional features to protect you against web threats (for example Firewall, Norton SafeWeb, Identity Safe, etc). As Drshlamo said, you can upgrade to the latest Norton product for FREE!
Please NOTE that this removes ALL Symantec products so be sure to have your license keys ready as you will need to reinstall all your Symantec software products. You can get your Norton product key from your Norton Account.
- Download the Norton Removal Tool as well as the Norton Internet Security Installation file to the desktop so that it can be easily found later
- Physically disconnect your self from the internet. That could include yanking out the ethernet cable/telephone cable from the back of your computer/turning off your wireless with either the wireless switch on your computer or turning off your router. This is to prevent any cyber attacks while you are vulnerable. DO NOT RECONNECT UNTIL MENTIONED!
- Back up any identity safe data:
- Uninstall the Norton software through the add/remove programs and let your computer reboot.
- Upon reboot, run the Norton Removal tool installed earlier. Upon completion, let your computer to reboot or reboot manually.
- Repeat step 4 two more times just to be sure.
- Upon the completion of the installation, reconnect your internet. Then run liveupdate repeatedly until all upgrades are complete. You may delete the files you downloaded in step 1.
Run the Norton Internet Security 2011 installation file downloaded in step 1. If you are using Windows Vista and above, right click the installation file and select run as adminstrator (as shown in the screenshot below).

To restore you identiy safe, recreate you identity safe profile. Then click on "restore identity safe data" and browse to the location you saved you .npm file.

Hi adamsp28
If you decide to upgrade from NIS 2010 to NIS 2011 there is no need to run the Norton Removal Tool unless you have been experiencing problems with NIS2010. Run the NIS 2011 installation package that you can download from the followin location
Once you have installed NIS 2011 please run livepudate repeatedly until you get a message that there are no more update left.
When I clicked on the NIS 2011 link IE8 blocked the site from downloading it. Now I had problems a month ago and I fixed it (sort of) by uninstal/reinstalling NIS 2010. I since installed IE 8 and I'm wondering if Norton is trying to compete with IE8's security? Don't know how to go about fixing this problem. Please help!
I have windows 7 64bit. Dialup.
Hello junkfresh
Please try turning off the smart screen filter in IE 8 under Safety and see if this helps your problem. Many people have said that the smart screen filter when turned on does interfere and compete with the Norton product. Thanks.
Hello adamsp28
If you purchased NIS 2010 and have not installed it yet, you can just install NIS 2011 from the link provided by mdturner and just use the key from the NIS 2010 version.to activate it. You do not have to install NIS 2010 version first. I am mentioning this because I am not sure if you have yet installed NIS 2010. I am thinking that perhaps you bought the 2010 version because it was cheaper than the 2011 version.
If you have been using another security program previously, please remove that other program using the control panel and reboot. Thanks.
Hi floplot, Disabled it and same thing happens. Any other know conflicts with NIS and IE8 I should know about. I guess now is the time I should clear up other compatibility problems before I download NIS 2011. Thanks
I have smart screen filtered switched on both my XP and Win7 machines. I have encountered no problem at all.
junkfresh Hi,
I am using XP SP3 and Win7 and have no problems with IE 8, as Tywin7 also confirms.
As you are experiencing problems, and this also occurred about a month ago, I would strongly suggest that you take Tywin7's advice and uninstall the NIS 2010 using the long but very effective procedures which he has so nicely illustrated.
This will ensure any previous issues which were due to something in NIS 2010 are not carried over into the NIS 2011 installation. Hopefully, all the problems will have been solved.
If you still have issues, please let us know.
Cheers,
drshlomo.
Hi junkfresh,
Try adding Norton.com to your Trusted Sites Zone in IE. Your security settings in the Internet Zone may be blocking the download. The download is very large, so if you are on dialup it could take a while.
