Norton Internet Security will not install on my PC

I am running Windows XP SP3 with IE8, and Norton Internet Security simply will not install on my computer. The installation program does get through numerous steps including: installs drivers, loads the virus checker, checks for updates, and runs scan.  However, in the second series of driver installations, it suddenly begins running creating error logs, uploads the log files to Symantec, and then uninstalls NIS (all without generating a specific error message to pinpoint the cause).  The Symantec online chat support folks tried for over five hours to fix the problem including: 1) running the Norton removal tool (numerous times), 2) cleaning up the registry, and 3) disabling all non-critical services (using msconfig).  However, nothing we have tried has worked; the same problem is occurring each time.  It was escalated to the Symantec research team (last Friday), but nobody from that team has called me back yet (despite having been scheduled twice already). 

 

If you have any suggestions, please help.  I am very frustrated trying to determine the underlying cause of the installation problem.  Thanks.
