NORTON IS **bleep**E ! ITS RANSOMEWARE

I got a new laptop with Windows 7. It came with Norton Internet Security 2010.

WMU offers a free copy of Norton, but requires NIS2010 to be removed prior to installation.

I uninstalled Nortion via. Add/Remove programs, rebooted, got blue-screen on start-up.

I used recovery to back up and put NIS2010 back on, and windows started fine.

Did some reading, decided I needed to use the Symantec Removal Tool, so I downloaded and ran that.

Removed NIS with removal tool, rebooted, got blue screen.

Ran recovery, Norton was back, but was now corrupt and wouldn't run at all. Clicking an icon would show an hourglass for a moment, then it was gone with no program running.

Upon reboot, blue screen again. Recovered, Norton is back, but the full version is still corrupt and won't run.

At this time I have a corrupt (full) version of NIS2010, an unprotected computer, no ability to install the new antivirus because it requires removal of NIS. Any method of removal that I have tried results in failed start-up.

Norton = Ransomware as uninstall = no startup (blue screen) I believe norton is responsible for this so as we wont ininstall the product !

I will be quite happliy spreading the word NEVER USE NORTON RANSOMEWARE EVER !

Hi smspop,

I am completely amazed at the similarites of this post from March 2010  bu Caleb_Y to your current post.

Of course that being said - perhaps if you followed  through the post I referenced - you may be able to fix this.

Please let us know !

I don't think you understand what the word ransom means.

uninstall norton = computer wonbot, BSOD reinstall norton computer boots = ransome install our software get your computer back, I'm sure thats close enough for my understanding.

Norton software is the cause of the problem period !

smspop,

Have you tried anything suggested in the other thread that is so very much similar to yours - inlcuding  WMU and offering the NIS that has not been updated for almost 3 years?????

BTW is WMU Western Michigan University?  Could you please tell us what the WMU stands for and if it is Western Michigan if you are considered faculty, a staff member or student?
