Norton LiveUpdate won't work

I got Norton Antivirus 2011 about a month ago.  The LiveUpdate has not run for 26 days.  When I try to run it, I get the "Unable to connect to network proxy server.  Please check your Norton proxy settings" message.

I 've tried everything I can think of.  I've looked at other messages in the forum that are similar to my issue and nothing seems to work.  I've tried it with "Automatically detect settings" checked and unchecked in Norton and in tools/internet options/connections/LAN settings.

 I don't think I have a proxy server.

Any suggestions?

Thanks for the help.

Hi toomuchpie

Open NIS, go to Settings, Miscellaneous Settings, click on Configure next to Network Proxy Settings and ensure that all boxes in there are unchecked.

Also worth looking in your hosts file C:\WINDOWS\system32\drivers\etc to see if Norton is blocked there.

There has been trial time resetter circulating on the net, where people are too tight to buy Norton just use the trial version, It blocks the program phoning home...

Please note the host file (hosts) cannot be read or opened normally as it has no file extension.

To reset the host file follow the instructions mentioned at http://support.microsoft.com/kb/972034

How about right clicking on the hosts file and opening with notepad, being doing this for years...

It would be really helpful if you can provide the exact error message. To find out the LiveUpdate error, please follow the steps in the Knowledge Base article:

Error: "Unable to connect to the Norton LiveUpdate server…" when I run LiveUpdate in my Norton 2011 product
