Norton Network Security Map

I have just set up a new network at home having switched broadband suppliers.  I have one device in the network map that i cannot identify.  I can identify 3 of the 4 items showing, but not the 4th.

On my old network i could account for all items i could see.  Any thoughts?

Have you purged the network map since the change over?  What is the device (after the purging) that you can not identify?

Possibilities could be a printer attached to the router itself, a shared media drive, an xBox that is connected.

In answer to the questions posed:

1 - yes the network map has been purged and i have removed the device, which adds itself again

2 - I can account for the devices on the network - the PC, the laptop and the Wii console.  This 4th item does not say what it is

Is there a way of querying an  IP address or MAC code?

The current IP and MAC show in the map.  (Physical address is the MAC ID of that item.)

For the system, open a cmd prompt window and type ipconfig /all and press enter.

Is it possible you once had a friend connect a labtop or something to your network temporarily that you have forgotten about? Could be that for some reason the router remembers each device that was ever plugged into it. Even though you already have likely tried this maybe try refreshing the norton network security map and see if the item dissapears. Also, is the network map showing the item as being online or offline?

The other thing you could try is to ping the IP of the mystery object.  Can you post a picture of your Network Map?  Directions on posting pictures are HERE .

The item is showing online and will reappear in the network map even if deleted.

Pinging the object results in responses.  I just don’t understand what it is and how to determine what it relates to.

If you can ping the object then it must be on your network; are you using a wireless network or wired?

What is the MAC address of the device? What is the Device Name? How is your network connected to your ISP? (Router? What model? etc)

Having read all the suggestions that haven't worked, I would suggest a hard-reset of your router.  By that, I mean using the reset button built into your router.  Most of these consist of a recessed button that you need to keep depressed for with the tip of a pencil for about 10 seconds while and after powering on the router.

You would have to reset all your router settings, but you might find that this cleans up the entire mess.

Dear All

Many thanks for your hep and suggestions.  I was idly looking at the WIndows Vista network map last night.  I looked at the properties of my gateway.  The MAC address of this corresponds to the MAC address of the unidentified item on my security map.  I think this threw me because my old router never used to appear in the map.

I think it safe to say, case closed!

I appreciate your help.

Good; glad the mystery is cleared up.  If you need anything else, come back and ask.
