Norton Nightmare or ISP Instability/Ignorance?

I only have knowledge of what kind of experience there is to be endured when using the particular Norton security product that I have used, which is the basis of this post to the Norton Community.  I read great reviews online about Norton Security so why am I living in a Norton Nightmare?  Can anyone tell me if there is a difference in a Norton product that is provided by and purchased directly from Norton and the Norton security service that is provided by my internet service provider?  (pardon me if I am a bit techno-deficient but I know just enough to be dangerous and Norton seems to be having a field day with it! LOL)

I am not laughing, however, when I say that my concerns are severe, unresolved, and appear to be totally unconsidered by any level of “support” that I have dealt with over the last few years.  It has been an exhausting experience.  I will need to purchase or make some other arrangements very soon for a stand-alone product for my computer security. *(and services or any other “HELP” for vulnerabilities, updates, scams, all that monkey-shine that a simple, honest person is not privy to.) This Norton product and service has been consistent, thorough and dependable in passing the buck and dodging the bullet!

So, believe what I read online about Norton Security or Symantec, or is my ordeal ordinary?

Thanks so much for any advice. Grace and Peace to all!

Hi TaraTharpe,

You are right - I asked for it and I got it!  wink

First of all in regards to Century Link and their offerings:

https://internethelp.centurylink.com/internethelp/at-ease.html

Which plan do you have?

I have noticed an error in their offerings - this page states the Standard  includes 5 GB of backup - with the Norton Internet Security (NIS) program and NIS does not have backup capability.

The Advanced level shows an offering of Norton 360 (N 360).  This program does in fact offer a backup function.

Thus if you have the Basic or Standard, you do not have the backup function.

This is shown correctly on this Century Link page:

https://internethelp.centurylink.com/internethelp/security-ctl.html

Shows no Backup available until you get to the Advanced level

Thus depending on which level you have, changes which functions you are offered, as well as what level of Support you are offered.

Some more general info I'd like to provide includes that no matter if you have the NIS or N 360 product installed (from the ISP or a retail) you are provided the same protection. There is no difference in the protection - basically as long as the Norton Icon in the System Tray has the green check mark - you are protected.  There may be slight differences in the licenses, but the protection is the same.

You mentioned setup/settings including Tamper Protection (should always be set to ON), the Default Settings of the installation are the best settings for the general user and should be maintained for those less technical savey.

The settings can sometimes be changed when you permit a remote connection with tech support and in some cases the settings are not always reset - but selecting the default settings (usually available at the top of each setting page/tab) should put everything back in order.

I see you did contact Norton Support - I always recommend Norton Support over the ISP Support and be sure to tell them you are running the Century Link Product.

www.norton.com/chat

Hopefully that answers some of your questions and gives you some things to try (Default Settings and Norton Support).

If you still have questions/concerns let us know and we will try to assist you.

Hello, You wanted it, you got it LOL  I promise that I did not intend to tell any more than the fact i wanted to know  if i had a dud product but I proceeded to clarify and simplify was just not part of the plan.  I did not finish the ending of my response because once again the whole darn thing has run me in circles until even I am unable decifer just which end is up!  So, I hope that you and maybe other members will read and at least have a good laugh.   I am done. Norton is uninstalled. I think taking my chances on the internet is less of a risk than my going completely insane with this never-ending saga of nobody knows really nothing about nothing but what they think they know somebody else can do so they can pass you to that person and keep on doing nothing about nothingcool  Sorry if anyone cannot find the insane humor in this, but I have to laugh to keep from going insane!  Goodnite folks!  Never again NOrton..

Enjoy the read.....

Hello and thank you for taking the time to offer insight for my problem.   Regarding my “specific” situation, you did not miss it friend, lol, I simply spared everyone the details of my experience because I assure you that it is more bizarre than anyone could understand if they even believed some of the happenings.

My question to the community was about the Norton security program that can be purchased directly from Norton.  I expressed that I only knew of my own personal experience with one specific Norton arrangement and as an open minded individual, I was seeking advice from you folks on the Norton Community to re-assure me that it would be safe, and even a more dependable product experience if I purchased a product for myself and my computer directly from the Norton company.  (in other words, I need confirmation that I just have a crap deal with the ISP, CenturyLink!)

I know you want details, so one simple issue that no one on the planet could solve or would solve is the Norton Online Backup which is part of the CenturyLink At-Ease plan I have, failing to install, over and over and over and I was told by one CSR that the other CSR had told me something that was not correct, and that the product would have to be totally uninstalled and reinstalled to enable all of the features: Norton internet security, NOB, CenturyLink homepage.  Mind you he did not correct the problem either.  At this point I am just glad I have a smidgen of security, or at least I think I do because the Norton scans and stuff keep telling me everything is ok, so I figure I for the sake of my sanity and not having to tell my tale of terror again to another oblivious tech who will not or cannot help me.   I am exhausted, again.  Well, some other things happen and I am becoming paranoid and calling CL PC services about everything and nothing, desperately seeking a qualified professional who will confirm that I have a product that functions as it has supposed to have been functioning for the last 3 years but it had not.  And I keep on rolling with this crazy train and the “history” of the program displayed all the results of scans, updates, etc. and stuff just doesn’t look right.  But what do I know?  But paranoia and a gut feeling that is usually dead on told be to call the “higher-ups” so to speak within the CenturyLink PC services and tell them how “ignorant” I was to the tech stuff and would they please humor in looking at what I did not understand in the scan results, it looked to be malicious.  No, I do not remember what it was named exactly because instead of who patched me to a remote person who uninstalled and reinstalled and when I asked her  really  I had to call another department for the backup that they could only help me with my uninstall and reinstall because the security scans were not detecting threats and my computer was in one pitiful mess, however, they could not tell me why the Norton was not detecting threats and protecting my pc when the message provided to me upon quick scans, live up-dates, etc. said everything was ok.  No, I was to contact the CenturyLink PC services who would be able to tell me how to configure the settings to ensure that my pc was protected, seeing that my settings were enabled/disabled mysteriously without me making any changes.  Such as the
tamper protect being disabled and the network drive protection somehow was disabled.  And I seem to have given more details that probably anyone cares to even be dealing with.  That is why I did not go into all of this in my original post.  It is a complicated mess, the “support” people know me by name, and even one tech from Norton who remoted in to “help”me on night and his name was Rosh, which I recognized as having “worked with” before and when I messaged to him, “hello Rosh, I have done this with you before,” and he disappeared never to return and he had just typed my telephone number in the chat box to confirm the account but when he realized it was me and my bizarr-0-bonanza he high tailed it out and was gone.  He knew how call my home phone number, he had my email address, but he did not want to deal.

Now, I apologize for the epistle but it is what i will need to purchase a security suite that is not provided by the ISP that I am with now, I will be moving out of state and I will not be using this services.  So, I to drag the Norton name through the mud, so to speak, while asking if it is possible for the product to function without so many issues/problems/quirks/lack of knowledge from whatever support I could find on my own, etc.   could be purchased through Norton and th you would care to have dumped on your mind!  I know that I have certwith the Norton internet security provide by CenturyLink.  The product is called “CenturyLink At-Ease” and the way it is supposed to work it to be installed through the “CenturyLInk Installer” on to my pc or network or however that works, I apologize for the lack of tech-savvy jargin. Lol  But,

Hello

Also, how did you contact Support? Was there a special link you used or a result of a Google Search for example.?

Thanks.

Hi TaraTharpe,

First question - who is your ISP and exactly what is your ordeal?

I may have missed it, but I don't see any specific situation spelled out, but you are living in a Norton Nightmare?
