Norton Power Eraser: Checking for new version

I downloaded Norton Power Eraser (NPE) to a folder on my hard drive.  When I run NPE, I get a message asking me to accept the End User License Agreement (EULA).  I accept the EULA, and next I get a message that says, "Checking For New Version," and nothing else happens after that. Why might I be getting stuck at this message and is there anything I can do about it?

Please have a look a these instructions for running Norton Power Eraser - they include steps to ensure your machine is in "safe mode with networking", which may be required to deal with problems like delphinium describes.

You can probably skip Step 2.1/2/3 about downloading NPE, but pay attention to the details in Step 1 to get into Safe mode first.
