Norton Power Eraser failed to remove every threat found

Plugged in a old external hard drive my friend gave me. Thought I should scan it since he's computer illiterate.

First I scanned it with Norton Internet Security 2011. Scanned it and it found quite a bit of viruses. NIS2011 removed them just fine. Then I went to use Norton Power Eraser to ensure this hard drive is clean. It found many threats. Checked to remove them. NPE told me to restart. I restarted. When It boots up, I logged in. NPE pops up ant tells me the removal results. Failed to remove every single threats. Does not give me an explanation or more information. Now I feel unsafe. By the way the computer I tried this on is a Dell 4600 running Windows XP Home edition 32 bit. It has a 3.06GHz Pentium 4 HT CPU and 2.5 GB of RAM. It is up-to-date in both Microsoft products and Symantec products(NIS2011 and NPE)

Please improve Norton Power Eraser.

I'm not sure it will work on a removable drive.  If thats where you got these errors.

NPE removes these "threats" after a reboot and before windows loads so they will not be in use or locked.

I doubt a removable drive can be accessable by NPE at that point.

these are on the desktop behind the NPE screen 

 

I used Hijack this to remove bone and the other by Shift+Delte

 

They were nothing but an inactive malware .exe

Thank you for sharing information on this thread about issues seen with Norton Power Eraser and removable drives.

 

While we may not have full information about this specific issue, an upcoming release may include fixes to various related conditions involving file handling. 

 

Keep looking in the forums for announcements related to future beta tests of NPE.
