Norton registry keys

How to get rid of   OverlayExcluded,   OverlayPending,   OverlayProtected from ShellIconOverlayIdentifiers?

I do not use Norton backup and the icon overlay display is turned off, but all of the above keys are taking place disabling overlays of other apps due to a limited number of overlays.

Please don't take the assistance being offered as negativity, personally I'm only attempting to assist with what my experience tells me to follow. I am more than happy to bow out of further assistance, if that is the avenue you would prefer. Could we review with you, your registry screenshots to compare with what my system shows, Windows 10 Pro x 64 version 21H2 build 19044.1889? Please review the below linked article if you haven't already.

As stated earlier, Windows and Microsoft are the basic issues here, that being, the way these entries are structured in the registry by the OS, other software that use overlays will compete for the entries. One Drive is a major offender. I do not have One Drive installed on any of my systems IMA. If Norton overlays are disabled the system shouldn't attempt to use those overlay entries. I do not see any entries related to Norton with my backup overlays disabled. Here are the locations for BOTH Windows 10 registry locations for overlays. What if anything am I missing?

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\ShellIcon‌OverlayIdentifiers
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Wow6432Node\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\explor‌er\ShellIconOverlayIdentifiers

2nd location: Is for 32 bit apps running in a 64 bit environment.

Here are what my registry entries look like on Windows 10 Pro x 64 version 21H2 build 19044.1889

There is only 1 entry in each of the three locations your initial post outlined.

Please have a look on your system in the following registry location: There are no entries there related to Norton as well.

Computer\HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\WOW6432Node\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\User Shell Folders\Backup

Why would I bother to suggest looking / scanning for malware in the registry? Also please review this articles.

Thanks, I appreciate your concern about my ability to "tinkering with the system registry unless you are an experienced IT". Yes, I am and I have been with Windows from Windows 1.0 (1985), programming for Dos and later Windows since 1982.

"Norton's settings being disabled WILL NOT cause system overlay issues".
This is an incorrect statement. ShellIconOverlayIdentifiers registry key is limited to 15 entries only and totally messes up other icons overlay. I do not need Norton overlays, I need others to function properly.

ShellIconOverlayIdentifiers key has nothing to do with Norton settings, this key belongs to Windows and Norton invades this key by placing its own entries that are taking place even if I do not use Norton's backup. I think this invasion is unacceptable.

I have to go into a safe boot to remove all three, but Windows 10 does not like secure boot and sometimes fails to reboot properly, that is why I need to remove those keys permanently.

And as to your final statement: why would I check for malware if I am using Norton which is supposed to do just that?

To summarize no other software settings are causing this problem but Norton itself takes the 15 overlays limit without any consideration. If the Backup status overlay is not checked those entries should not be used.

Hello. First off, I wouldn't and don't suggest tinkering with the system registry unless you are an experienced IT person. No one here will suggest doing so that I know of. That being said. Have you checked these settings in Norton? I believe you are saying you have these disabled. Norton's settings being disabled WILL NOT cause system overlay issues, check for other software settings that may be the culprit. I would also scan your system for malware to check for that being a possible cause of shell overlay issues being present.
