Norton removal tool and Winfax

I have Norton 360 3.5.2.11 one one of my PCs and since I installed it the PC has slowed to the point where it is barely useable. I am running through the fix described on this website but am running into problems with the Norton Removal Tool.

It is telling me it cannot continue until I uninstall WinFax. I have been to add/remove programmes and Winfax is not showing there. It is also not showing in my programme list.

Any ideas how I can proceed?

The Pc in question is rather old (2005!!) so it is quite possible that at some time it may have had WinFax. Thing is, the removal tool won’t let me continue until it thinks there is no more Winfax.

The removal tool is telling you that it has detected WinFax on your machine? What is the exact message?

I click on Run.

Get the Welcome screen and click Next.

The next screen is Manual Application Removal.

The message is

"The following programs were found on this computer. These must be removed through "Add/Remove Programs" before Norton Removal Tool can proceed."

Symantec WinFax Pro

Hmmm looks like WinFax was on your computer at one time and was not cleanly uninstalled. I found this document on how to manually remove WinFax Pro over here:

http://service1.symantec.com/SUPPORT/faxprod.nsf/docid/1998102114161204

Note: the document also mentions modifying the registry. By all means back up your registry beforehand. Finally, I also found the WinFaxPro Support Forums over here:

It looks a little techy for me!

Have asked a guru (Phil_D) to look at  your thread; maybe he or someone else knows of a less complicated way to get the leftovers of WinFax out of your machine. Thanks for your patience ;-)

Lol ;-)))

Phil_D has responded to my PM and told me to notify Yogesh_Mohan (our Norton product expert) of this issue. I have done this. Now we've got to wait for Yogesh to come online ;-)) Thanks again for your patience.

Wonderful. Thank you very much.

Hi Mscott,

Search in your Windows registry for the key "delrina" and remove/delete it. Commonly found in the following locations:

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Delrina
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Delrina
HKEY_USERS\.DEFAULT\Software\Delrina

Then try to run the Norton Removal tool. Let us know the results.

Please back up your registry before making any changes - just in case things go wrong.

Mscott, If you're unclear on how to back up your registry, have a look at this article from Microsoft.

Yayhay. It worked!

Thank you all very much. (especially for explaining it in a way a mere human could understand)

:smileyvery-happy:

Hi Mscott,

Thanks for posting back with the good news. Were you able to reinstall Norton 360, too?

Yup. It reinstalled perfectly and picked up my Product Key too.

Now I'm just running Live Update to make sure that's all u to date, resetting my backup stuff and then... hoping my computer runs a bit faster now.

Fingers crossed.

Great to hear that, Mscott :-)
