I am trying to remove Norton products from my PC (XP-SP3). Downloaded NRT yesterday and ran it. Next screen indicated that Symantec AntiVirus 9 or later" must be removed using Windows Add/Remove Programs. There are no listings there. Removal of this program was done quite a while ago. There are still many registry entries relating to Symantec as well as an IRP hook (listed as \Driver\atapi DriverStartIo-> 0x8A2412FB) that was flagged by AVG. Their tech support believed that it is a fragment left from Symantec. I manually removed many Symantec files and folders that probably were not causing any problems. One of my worst problems is very slow operation of PC, and I have been told that the IRP hook may be a partial cause.
In addition, when I start MS Outlook 2007, I get a messsage: "The Add-in "Symantec Antivirus 10.1" (C:\Program Files\Symantec Antivirus\vpmsece4.dll) cannot be loaded and has been disabled by Outlook. Please contact the Add-in manufacturer for an update. If no update is available, please uninstall the Add-In." There is no entry in Add/Remove Programs for this.
Bottom line, I really want to run NRT in hopes that it will remedy these issues. What has NRT found related to Symantec Antivirus 9 or later that prevents it from running? How can I eliminate it and run NRT?
