Norton Safe Web - green checkmarks

For several days now, whenever I search using Google, the green checkmarks appear only on Page 1.  When I go to Page 2, etc., there are no green checkmarks.

Is anyone else experiencing this?  Is Norton Safe Web having problems?  Or is it just my computer?

Thank you.

HI Blue452,

This seems to be an intermittant  problem affecting Internet Explorer and is due to changes that Google makes in its search results pages every so often.  Usually, if you refresh the page the site safety icons will appear.  It is not a problem with your computer.

Thank you SendOfJive.  Will do as you suggest - refresh the page.

Have a nice day.

You are correct.  That is exactly what happens.  A workaround is to refresh the browser on that second page.  Then the green safety symbols appear.

This behavior is not specific to the new NIS 2010 7.8.0.5.  It also occurred with the previous version.  I didn't bother to post it because Symantec has been so obtuse with regard to this problem in the past.

I was the first person to report this problem early this calendar year.  Initially I was met with sceptism by some forum posters and ignored by Symantec.  Soon many other posters reported the problem.  The point is -- after too long Symantec claimed to have fixed the problem.  Except that it wasn't, exactly.  Symantec said that the fix also depended on the user having the add-on XML DOM Document enabled.

Q1: Is that requirement documented somewhere besides this forum?  (Because 99% of customers don't visit this forum.)

Q2: Does Symantec check the settings on the customer's browser and warn if XML DOM Document is not enabled?

Q3:  If this requirement is not documented (in an easily findable place) and if Symantec does not check the customer's browser, how can they claim the problem "has been fixed"?

Some posters claim that this is a Google problem, not Symantec's.  I do not believe that.  Certainly not _solely_.

For whatever it's worth, this is also an intermittent problem with other site vetting programs. I've seen the same behavior with McAfee Site Advisor and WOT (Web of Trust). And, the same remedy also works for those other programs. Namely, refreshing the page.

I personally believe that at least part of the problem does indeed lie with Google. They have been making massive changes to their search engine technology lately. I can't imagine that all the work they've been doing hasn't had some effect on programs like Safe Web and Site Advisor.

I have noticed it occasionally with Firefox also. And a refresh usually solves it.

what the solution to this issue is when you hit "search" from the goole main page and go to the search results, next to the search bar is and drop down menu that has "instant on" switch it to instant off and you should have your little green check marks or yellow X's or red X's again :smileysurprised:

windows 7 pro 64 NIS 2011 IE 9 beta

Search engine Google, safe web green check marks do not appear, using IE 9

however using Bing search engine in IE 9  safe web works great.

Firefox no issues at all.

Prior to 48 hours had no problem with Google.

Obviously I have done live updates rebooted, Confirming that safe search in google is off, Norton toolbar enabled,

Try refreshing the page. Sometimes this causes the checkmarks to appear. Also, if you're using Google Instant Search you might have more success if you turn that feature off. At the very least, your checkmarks should appear more quickly.

I've also noticed another Instant Search bug where the first listed item doesn't get a checkmark even when other items on the page do. Again, turning off instant search seems to fix this problem.

Update,

Using IE 9 NIS 2011, win 7 pro 64

The green check mark appears for, Yahoo search, Bing search, and Ask search, but still no green check mark for Google search.  ( Firefox no issues all sites work)

Refreshed Google pages, instant search off, uninstalled  NIS 2011 and re installed. Restore default settings in IE 9, Ran Malwarebytes/combo fix,  nothing found.

Prior to 4 days ago, the green check marks where visible and  worked fine using IE 9.

Does anyone know what "manage add on's" should be enabled/disabled for Google in IE 9

It seems that what Jackal has writen (check his answer a few posts up) has not been ackowledged by many. I found this problem with Mozilla Firefox, using Google search, but in my particular case there was an intersting twist:  The checkmark would show up in ALL pages, systematically, but NOT in the first entry of EVERY page, including the first one.

As soon as I applied the change suggested by Jackal, voila!, the checki mark shows now, everytime, in all entries of all pages.

Thank your Jackal! Great catch!!!   :smileyhappy:
