Norton says I need to scan for viruses -

I'm running Norton 360 V5 on WinXp machine. Everything has been fine untill this evening. The icon in my task bar(next to the clock) has a red "X" on it. When i open N360 it says "your PC needs to be scanned for viruses & spyware". Well I've clicked fix about a dozen times now and it finds nothing but continues to say I need a scan, even after a reboot.  It also had said my firewall had been disabled but it fixed that the first round of scans.

So anyone have any ideas what went wrong???

thanks

Hi,

did you tried to run a Full or a Quick System Scan manually?

yes i have ran the quick scan, as thats what Ver 5 seems to want to do, and Ive ran a Full scan.  When i turned my pc on this morning it said i had 7 problems that needed fixed. One was my firewall was disabled again, i never changed but N360 enabled it. So I clicked Fix and it cleared everything, but still says I have NEVER ran a virus scan, ever!??

Just seems to make changes to N360 after I reboot my system, even IE8 acts fishy. That was another problem, in IE8 the Norton toolbar keeps coming and going from the toolbar area. I did remove it from the IE toolbar(clutter) but wasnt sure when it asks about disabling other Norton components like Symantec NCO BHO, and the Symantec Intrusion prevention. Which the last two I left enabled, just killing the tool bar banner. But typicaly Im using Chrome as a browser any more.

I have noticed their was some major changes in N360 Ver. 5 on how it scans for viruses, maybe not for the better. It seems norton picks what it considers "safe" programs or files and does NOT search those(even doing a FULL scan) so scans seems faster then usual.

I have downloaded the Norton Power Eraser but have Not installed it yet as Im afraid it was render programs or PC useless.

Now Im just realy concerned about my PC security doing anything on the web... =(

Hello xeroinfinity

You can sign up for one of the malware removal sites and ask them if you are infected. They will have the proper scans for you to run to determine that. If they give you the all clear status, then we can examine things further if you are still having the same problems.

Power Eraser should only be used under the supervision of an expert.

Please come back and let us know how you made out. Thanks.

is Malwarebytes a good tool to use?

I just downlaoded it, havnt installed yet. Was hoping this problem would just fix its self and go away. lol

I dont plan on using the Norton Power eraser, last resort! And thanks!

Yes Malware Bytes is good

well i ran malwarebytes and it found 1 thing wrong:

Even after the reboot N360 again says i had 7 items that needed corrected, ie smart firewall is disabled, and something to do with the IE8 browser, and that Ive never ran an antivirus scan. Ive checked N360 settings and everything is turned on though it says its not.

What realy P's me off is paying $70 for N360 and its not catching everything like adware/spyware. Which I just upgraded to version 5 on 4/13/2011 and it seems like Ive had little problems ever since. And from what Ive read here Im not the only one having issues with the ver.5......

IDK, i guess I have been having other issues with my PC since building it back in Oct 2010. About a month after build I keep getting random restarts, doesnt matter if Im using the pc or its just at idle. Im figuring this is a xp or other softtware issue from diagnosing things with ASUS forums. Figuring I'll need to wipe my 1TB HD and reinstall XP SP3 and N360, along with the 1000 updates/patches.. Mondays! =P

Also when I open my IE8 browser, norton pops open a new tab which is redirected to this link, http://us.norton.com/products/toolbar/popup.jsp?pvid=n3605 , but the page never loads/dead link ?!!

well after trying many different programs, searching high & low, it still says i need to scan for viruses. Every time i turn on my PC it comes up with the same 7 things that need fixing, even though i fixed them previously.  Nothing else has been discovered as far as spyware/adware or viruses. i have many screen shots if that would help?!

I do remember a few years back Norton done the same thing on my kids PC which wasnt online much at all. On this machine it happened after some big XP updates and new version of norton was released, i suspect my problem now is related. I even reinstalled XP and Norton but the problem was still there. Ended up removing Norton and never got back online with that particular pc. I hope that isnt the case here>..!

What I do notice is that when I run the scan as requested by N360 it only scans about 4500 files then moves to the next task. Even after I ran it 50 times yesterday, quick and FULL scans, it continues to say Ive NEVER EVER ran a virus scan. So I'd say something in the N360 recent updates is the culprit. Im just afraid Im not realy protected online at all so when my pc isnt in use I shut it off or unplug my DSL cable.

Anyone else have any other possible solutions for this ??

something else I just noticed is that the "performance" tab, or system insight, is NOT working. When i click the performance and it goes to the insight part with CPU & memory the top three always say loading and never load, even after hours of time to load. This was just working fine last week, so i beleve these things are all related.

Just got the small N360 updates but nothing for this problem, as my problems continue after this update.

Might be asking for a refund if I cant figure this out ASAP! =(

If you are running IE9 please switch to compatibility mode so we can see your text .......

<gdrvvf> .....

Yeah, you better gdrvvf!!  :smileyvery-happy:

HI xeroinfinity,

If you are having general problems with the operating system, then Norton may not be able to work properly.  Otherwise, it may be a problem with your Norton installation.  You should try uninstalling Norton using the Norton Removal Tool, and reinstalling.  If you use Identity Safe, be sure to use the Identity Safe backup option to save your data before you begin.

thanks SendOfjive, overall my operating syst is working fine, takes less then 20 secs to boot and not a bit slow during heavy loads(mutitasking). Earlier i mentioned years back my kids PC had norton(system works) and it done the exact same thing(they havnt been on my new pc Im having troubles with lol).

Though I am noticing many things wrong with N360 ver 5.1.0.29 that i am about to explain.

The only program, or software of any kind I have installed in the last 4 months was Microsoft Silverlight.  I uninstalled that today and when i tried a virus scan N360 just kept spinning the activity wheel, but Never scanned one file in over 15 mins. I could not shut Norton down or stop the scan or allow me to bring up task manager to kill it so I had to reboot.

And of coarse it said I had 7 things to fix again, as follows. The smart firewall is disabled, virus scan has never been ran, IE temp files outdated need removed, windows temp files have not been removed, IE history needes deleted, registry cleanup could be cleaned by deleteing broken entries, and disk optimization needs to improve performance.

And all of this didnt happen untill ver 5 update(4/13/2011 - I downloaded and installed Norton 360 v5)and then in the last 7-10 days their was that IE8 tool bar that wasnt  showing before....but is now persistant as h***!! Everytime i close or "disable" the safe seearch toolbar add on it changes to enabled soon as i restart my pc. :robotsad:

sorry if these are long posts , Im trying to be precise as possible. we definatly have a problem w/N360 ver5 as read in these forums. But ya a uninstall is coming soon, but I'd bet its not going to work and i'll have other nightmares uninstalling this. lmao =)

one thing i just remembered was last week while pc was idle, a screen popped up and said Symantec system framework has something and needs to shut down. That mean anything?? All i noticed was the norton icon in my taskbar disapeared but i restarted later and it was back functioning with no red X on the icon. And thanks for the support everyone! more usefull than Nathin thats for sure. =P

It sounds like a possible faulty installation - I'd just get on with uninstalling/reinstalling Norton.

sounds like a plan SoJ!

ok i've got the uninstall thing. The install is another story. Originaly i had bought N360 ver3, i think oct of 2010 or right befor that it upgraded to ver 4. And the most recent ver sion 5 all still sit in my download folder.

Question is should i remove all of those download managers and folders?

They all say to just copy those files to install on more then 1 pc, which i did pay for 3 pc's. just want to get it right the first time.

It's fixed !!! =) I ran buDump and then the Norton removal tool. Install went smoothly, updating from ver 3 to 5 wasnt bad once i logged into my account. Hopfully this wont become an issue again.

And thanks for the support everyone ! If I hadnt came here for help, I'd still be monkeying with it next month. :smileyvery-happy:

Glad to hear everything went well.  I hope this proves to be trouble-free for you from here on out.
