After updating my DIVX, I was unpleasantly alerted with a pop up the following day: "Install Norton Security Scan". There was no option to cancel or say "No". Instead, I could only click "Yes" and was unable to close the window. This had malaware/virus written all over it.
No legitimate company would try to force an install or sneak their software on to your computer. Especially acompany that sells a product which helps users to "understand if your computer is currently protected from known threats". This program by definition was malaware because it was attempting to gain unauthorized access to my computer!
Upon poking around a little (1) (2) (3) - I discovered this software was intentionally deployed with my DIVX update by Symantec. For shame. Forcing users to install your malaware detection software.
No problem though, I'll just use "Winows 7 control panel -> uninstall" to remove this nasty little program. Oh wait, that doesn't work!!! Instead, when I attempt to uninstall, it launches the very program I am attempting to remove and starts a malaware search...
Well done Symantec. Using malaware to deploy your malaware detecting software. What's next, giving puppy dogs cancer so you can sell your cancer medine?
I award you no points, and may God have mercy on your souls.
