I just installed the Norton Security Suite (NSS) (Version 4.0.0.127) and I am having problems with my flash drive. I have two computers. When I installed NSS on the first computer, my flash drive became unusable (I/O error); however, it still worked on my second computer. Upon installing NSS on the second computer, the flash drive began having the same I/O error. This leads me to believe that some conflict with NSS is preventing me from using my flash drive. How do I correct this situation?
The problem can be from the Flashdrive and Norton Security Suite installation may be a mere coincidence. Did you try reformatting your Flashdrive? If not, try that first. You can also disable the Auto-protect and Smart Firewall from Norton Security Suite, and then check whether the problem persists.
Firstly check your Norton settings to see, if Norton isn't blocking it. Secondly if that doesn't work try reformatting the USB Blash Drive. (Note* Reformatting will wipe all the files off the USB Flash drive*)
Thank you for your reply. I am reasonably sure that Norton Security Suite (NSS) is causing the problem. Here is my reasoning.
1. The flash drive worked well on both computers prior to NSS installation.
2. Once I installed NSS on computer #1, the flash drive did not work on computer #1. However, the flash drive did work on computer #2 (prior to NSS installation on #2).
3. Once I installed NSS on computer #2, the flash drive stopped working on computer #2.
4. If the drive was faulty, it would not have worked on computer #2.
5. The drive stopped working on two separate machine following the installation of NSS.
6. Sure seems like NSS is goofing up my flash drive.
7. I have a second flash drive that works fine after NSS installation. Go figure.
I had the same idea that you did. Following my problems, I reformatted the flash drive. No luck. It still doesn't work.
Please forgive my lack of knowledge, but which setting should I check? I looked through the settings menu and I have no idea which setting would address my situation.
I did try a reformat, but that was no help. I still can't access the flash drive.
I've had the same problem with my Flash Drive but with Norton 360 4.0. My flashdrive is a Sandisk U3 Cruzer. It worked for almost a year when I had Norton 360 3.0 on 2 different computers. After doing a free update download from the Symantec website to Norton 360 4.0 to both computers, the flashdrive won't load on either computer.
I tried changing settings in Norton 360. Possibly I didn't change the right ones. The flash drive still won't work.
Then I uninstalled Norton 360 4.0 and tried to reinstall Norton 360 3.0, but I couldn't get the installation to start up.
I contacted a Norton tech for an online chat. He took over my computer and attemted to get the flashdrive to work with Norton 360 4.0 He spent over an hour but couldn't get the flashdrive to work.
Finally I asked him if he could reinstall Norton 360 3.0 He was able to uninstall 4.0 and install 3.0 The flashdrive worked!
He also corrected my subscription renewal date that had been lost in the installing and uninstalling.
I was then able to install 3.0 on my other computer and my flashdrive worked on that computer also.
I would like to get Norton 360 4.0 to work with my U3 Flashdrive, since I'm going to needing a new Norton subsciption in a couple of months and it's been my experience that it's cheaper to buy an upgrade than it is to renew a subscription. I don't want to refornat the flashdrive. I like it's security features.
I assume that any fix to Norton Security Suite could also be applied to Norton 360 4.0, so please let me know if someone finds one.
I recently installed Norton Security Suite in 2 of my laptops (Win XP). Now Norton blocks access to the drive. Although I can see the drives on "My Computer", I cannot access anything on the drive. Windows explorer become unresponsive when I try to access either of the U3 drives. The drive is password protected, if that matters (requires a password to be able to launch or view anything on the drive).
The security history shows the following when I plug in the U3 drive.
I think, the problem is with the password protection in your U3 Scandiskdrive. When you try to access the drive, Norton AutoProtect will try to scan, and this will be blocked by the password protection in U3 drive(as Norton don't know the password). This may cause a conflict and freezes the Windows Explorer. Try to add your U3 Sandisk drive to the AutoProtect Scan Exclusion list. Here are the steps for latest version of Norton Security Suite:
5. Click Under Exclusions, next to Scan Exclusions, click Configure. 6. Under Scan Exclusions, click Add. 7. Browse and select the U3 drive and click OK. 8. Under Auto-Protect Exclusions, click Add. 9. Browse and select the U3 drive and click OK. 10. Click Apply > OK.
Still will not work. I turned off the password option on the U3 drive. Plugged the drive in and the autostart pop-up window came up. That did not happen before when the password protection was enabled. Selected "open to view files" and nothing. Then I tried your solution. When I get to selecting the drive, the system slows to a crawl. I takes several minutes before both U3 drives (D: and E: on my PC) show up. Selecting either one, after several minutes of waiting, gives an error message "command could not be completed because of I/O error". System continues very slow until you unplug the U3 drive. Then everything is back to normal.
Any other ideas. Never had this problem when using McAfee. Not impressed with Norton so far.
Did you use the McAfee removal tool 2 or 3 times before you installed CNSS? You may still have some remains of McAfee in your system which may be interfering.
No I did not. However, if you read the previous post by another user, he has the same problems and he did not have McAfee installed in his system. If you look at the log, it clearly shows Norton blocking the drive. The problem is Norton, not McAfee or McAfee remains. And no, re-formatting the drive is NOT an option, as others have suggested. It works just fine everywhere else, except on the PC's with Norton. How do I stop Norton from blocking the U3 drive?
I too am having this problem with Norton 360 4.0 trial.. thank god for trials. Before insalling Norton the Sandisk Titanium+ worked just fine, I've used on 4 other computers in the house that have other security software and it works flawlessly.
I am having the same problem with Norton Security Suite 4.1.0.32 and my Sandisk U3 drive. It clearly is a problem with Norton.
Removing password protection on the U3 and trying the above suggestions don't work. When I close Norton using Windows Task Manager, my U3 drive loads normally.
If I start the computer with the Sandisk w/ U3 plugged in it works like it should, but this of course is not possible to do at all times. Come on Symantec.
Have you tried going to www.u3.com to see if there are any suggestions perhaps on their site? I don't know if that site will be of any help, but maybe if ScanDisk finds out that there is a problem using their products with N360 version 4, they can contact Symantec and work together for a resolution. Maybe you can contact the support from ScanDisk or u3 and help to get some action that way also. Just an idea that may help to move things along.
Please plugin the U3 drive, and go to the Network Map in your Norton program. Set the status of the U3 drive to Full trust, and check whether you can access the drive. Let us know the results.
There was another suggestion mentioned in the Sandisk forum. You can also try that(if you wish). Go to Device Management. Select SanDisk Cruzer Contour USB Deviceunder the DVD/CD-ROM Drives category. Right-click on it and select the option to disable it. Restart the computer and check whether you can access U3 drive.
Not sure exactly what to do on the first idea. For the second, disabling the usb, it did not work. Since it was disabled I could not access it. Please give me more detail instructions on the first idea.
Setting the U3 to Full Trust did not work. Still same problem. Can see both drives created when you plug in the U3 drive in My Computer, as I did before, but can't open or access either one
Go back to the Device Manager and Uninstall the U3 device. Close Device Manager and remove the U3 drive (if attached to your system). Go into the Settings > Firewall > Program Control and delete the rule for the U3 Launcher. Click Apply and close the Setting windows. Reboot the system and once fully started, attach the U3 drive and let Windows reinstall the drivers and U3 startup program.
