Norton Security Suite - How to stop automatic scans?

I've got the Comcast NSS installed on Win 7. When I go into Settings/Task Scheduling and change scans from Automatic to Manual, so that I can pick when it does the scans, I see that it also turns off all the functions on the  Automatic Tasks tab, like LiveUpdate. If I try to enable LiveUpdate, it turns Automatic Scans back on.

This is surely a bug that they cannot be adjusted independent of each other?

Thanks

That seems to have fixed it.

Thanks

Apparently Norton does not like being told not to run scans.  It started running a background full scan today.

When I go into settings/Task Scheduling/Scheduling, it still shows Manual Schedule. The Automatic Tasks tab only has Live Update checked. Yet it is still running a background Full Scan.

Thanks

Hi Vincenzo

That scan will have been already scheduled to run. Now that it has done so and you have gone to a manual schedule it should not do so again.

I just went thru the procedure I suggested again and in Task Scheduling, the scheduling Tab of mine shows it changed back to Automatic (with the LiveUpdate as the only checked task on the Automatic Task tab).

Are you sure you do not have a full system scan scheduled thru the Windows Task Scheduler?

I don't see anything in Task Scheduler that seems related to this.

Maybe it was just scheduled already, let's see what happens next week.

By the way, my user account is a standard user, and as such Norton will not even let me look at the Settings. I need to change the account back to Admin in order to see what is set. (Run As Admin does not make any difference).

I guess Symantec never got the memo that applications are supposed to be usable in standard user accounts.

Thanks

To possibly help you out , Check this setting:

From the main page, Settings> Administrative Settings> under Product Security insure Non-Admins Access to Settings is turned ON.

Also please note:

This setting lets you access and configure all the options in the Settings window from a non-admin user account as well.

By default, this option is turned off. You need to log on to your computer as an administrator to turn on this option. You cannot access the Settings window if the Settings window is opened in some other user account on your computer.

Hope this helps you out!

That worked nicely.

Thanks for the tip.

It is running an automatic scan again.

Settings>Scheduling tab still says Manual - "CSS will only perform scans when you click Run Scans"

Automatic Tasks tab only has Live Update checked.

Any ideas what to try next?

Thanks

See if you can switch the Manual setting to Automatic and Apply. Then go back and check the Automatic Tasks Tab and see if Liveupdate is the only task checked.

Then I guess we'l have to wait another week to see if that worked. :smileysad:

BTW - Could you check you Security History > Recent Scans and be able to tell what type of scan had run?

When I change Manual back to Automatic, it puts checkmarks in all the entries on the Tasks tab except IE History and Registry Cleanup.

History shows an Idle Full Scan.

I decided to give on trying to stop the scans, and set it instead to monthly.

But with that setting, LiveUpdate is not running at all, even though it shows as enabled on Quick Controls and Automatic Tasks.

By changing the Scheduling Tab to Monthly and having LiveUpdate checked - you have set it to do a LiveUpdate once a month.

That seems odd. When I set it to Manual, as long as there was still a checkmark in the LiveUpdate box in Quick Controls and Automatic Tasks tab , it still continued to run Live Updates. But not so when I change Manual to Monthly.

Ever since I poked around in the settings after the last post, it has now started doing AutoUpdates. I made no changes to any settings though.

Don't feel bad, I have had things like that happen to me also from time to time.   Most aggravting thing is I don;t know what I did to "break it" and even worse, don;t know what I did to "fix it".  Alll one can do is hope not to do whatever "broke it" again.

FWIW,  when I do some troubleshooting, trying to duplicate problems, and I start changing multiple settings I write down the original settings so I can get back to where I was when I started.

Let's see if it continues to work.

I haven't changed anything, and now it has stopped doing LiveUpdate. It was working, but today it says last update was 1 day ago. So I ran it manually.
