Norton Security Suite will not open/function after system restore

Had to perform a system restore with Windows 7. Comcast is my internet service provider and includes Norton Security Suite in the package.  Following the restore, I am now advised by the Action Center that Norton Security Suite is "Off."  When I attempt to turn it on, I am asked if I want to run the program and I click "Yes, I trust the publisher and want to run the program," whereupon absolutely nothing happens. If I try to open Norton Security Suite--either from the desktop icon or the start menu--nothing happens.

I cannot go to an earlier restore date, because there is none.

I am at a complete loss.  Can anybody help?

Thank you.  Will be trying that today. Since the package is offered by Comcast, that will likely be the  path to reinstalling. I very much appreciate your help, Dave.

For some reason, nothing happens when, under Programs and Features, I direct Windows to uninstall Norton.  Any suggestions?

Hi shoeless,

I assume you are following the instuctions that Krusty13 provided fro you to use from the Comcast NSS FAQ.

If NSS does not appear in the Programs & Features, skip that step and proceed with the Norton Removal Tool.

Just to verify - you shojld be using the instructions here in your situation.

Let us know how things go from there.

Yeah, I followed Krusty13's instructions as best I could.  NSS did appear under Programs and Features, but it would not allow me to uninstall it.  Upon the recommendation of a Semantic Tech, I downloaded Norton Removal. Followed the instructions and uninstalled Constant Guard in Programs and Features, then removed NSS.  Seemed to work perfectly until I attempted the reinstall through Comcast--it froze midway and I had to reboot into Safe Mode.  This is not the first time I have had an application crash on me during the midst of this crisis and each time I have had to reboot and follow up with a system restore.

i suspect the worst, at this time: I suspect that I am going to need to reinstall Windows.  Does tha make sense?

Hi shoeless,

I would not say a reinstall of Windows is necessary - at least not until I give up on getting this fixed for you.

Not sure what you are referring to when you say Constant Guard, but will assume it is the Constant Guard Protection Suite.

Please follow these instructions to UN-install Constant Guard:

Copy and paste the following link in your Internet Explorer browser – http://downloads.idvault.com/comcast/cleaner/constantguardcleaninstall.exe

  1. Select “Run” when prompted.
  2. The tool will ask for permission to close all browsers. If prompted, select “Yes.”
  3. The cleaner will note “Completed” when it has.
  4. Restart your computer. It is the Restart which actually completes the software removal

As I stated above, these are the insructions you should follow now:  http://forums.comcast.com/t5/Security-and-Anti-Virus/How-To-Uninstall-Reinstall-Norton-Security-Suite-after-a-problem/m-p/870735    If you run into something that doesn't work, please stop right there and let me know.   Please also have a look in Programs  & Features (prior to uninstalling it) and tell me the Version (far right hand column) that is installed.

There are others both here on Norton and on the Comcast forums with similar problems so that's why so many questions and why we need to go step b y step.

Thanks for you patience and help in trying to get this sorted.

You asked me to stop and let you know if i ran into something that doesnt work.  Am at the step that directs me to uninstall NSS via Add/Remove programs.  Will not remove it Whether I right-click and hit Uninstall or click the Uninstall/Change link at the top. Shall I just move on to the Norton Removal Tool?

You also requested that I let you know the version being used.  Assume you meant Norton Security Suite, but just in case...

Norton--5.2.2.3

Constant Guard Protection Suite--1.13.111.1

Hope that helps.

Hi shoeless,

Thanks for that info - before going on to the Norton Removal Tool, please try to go to  start All Programs, Norton Security Suite and expand that entry, Click on the Uninstall Norton Security Suite - my guess is that you'll get the same result as from your previous ujninstall attempt - but try it.  If it also does not work, go ahead and run the Norton Removal Tool and if that runs, reboot and then continue with the instuctions in the link I provided.

Your version is in fact 2 versions behind and once we get that version removed - hopefulyl it willupgrade to the latest version which is the version on the  Comcast server.

Please keep us posted.

You were right: going through All Programs and clicking on Uninstall Norton Security Suite had the same unsuccessful results. I was asked the standard, "Do you want the following program to make changes to this computer..." But after responding yes, it went nowhere.

so I downloaded the Norton Removal Tool and ran it. Followed all steps as instructed and it appeared to clean NSS from the computer.  However when I attempted the new install of Constant Guard Security Suite (which incorporates Norton), it froze halfway through the installation--just as it had done before.

I did notice a windows notification indicating that Java wanted to make changes to the computer.  This keeps coming up, and I'm wondering if it is hijacking the installation midstream.  I had disabled--or so I thought--Java some time ago as a security precaution; but I read now that you can't remove it completely from Internet Explorer which I use as my browser.

Java is constantly trying to "make changes" to the computer.  Could it in anyway be responsible for this monstrous headache? I realize its function is something different, but if it can pop up in the middle of some other operation, could it somehow freeze that app while its trying to do it's thing?

Look forward to your response.

Thanks for the feedback again - there4 is something I may havemissed or you did not understand.

We do not need to have anything to do with Constant Guard Protection Suite in order to install Norton Security Suite - we are actually far better off staying away fronm CGPS.

I did provide instuctions to remove CGPS in this post which also included the instructions I wanted you to follow.  Once you had NSS installed, completed LiveUpdates etc, then you sholdhave quit.  Do not atempt to install CGPS - forget about it for the time being.

There is no JAVA involved with Norton - I can't speak for CGPS - as I would never leave that touch any of my systems.

Let's get NSS working 100% on your system and at that point in time - you can go to the Comcast Forums and get help (maybe) with CGPS  I'll guide you to the right link on Comcast for that assistance - but please - no more CGPS involvement - Norton and CGPS are separate programs and are not dependent on each other.

Do you at this point have Norton Security Suite installed and activated per my instructions in this link?

You, Sir, are a genius and a savior!  Yes, at long last, I have finally reached Nirvana...and it's a Norton.  I can't thank you enough for your tenacity and your patience.  I hope you realize the significance of what you offer to lost souls such as myself--what a tremendous service!

I still need to move on to my Java and audio issues, but at least now I feel comfortable doing so.  But, if I can, I'd like to pick your brain just a bit further.  In the course of trying to find the right solution, I stumbled across more than a few folks who just suggested I dump Norton and opt for something like MSE.  That, naturally, was all the advice they were able to tender; but the experience left me with the question, "is there something I should add to Norton to beef up my protection?"  ...And does that open up a whole new discussion thread?

Thanks again, yank, you really came to my rescue.  If I were able to, I'd be attaching a virtual bottle of wine to this.

Well, since you offered - I think I will.  drink.gifNow that thatis over with.

You are most welcome for the assistance and I am also glad you got it sorted out.

In regards to using anything else with Norton,  I keep Mywarebytes Anti-Malware Free (without the trial) and also SUPER AntiSpyware Free on my systems as on demand (second opinion) scanners.  The two of them can get rid of PUP (Potentially Unwanted Programs) which Norton does in fcat not scan for all in that category.  I am sure others will have more info.
