Norton Service Unstoppable

Well, this is pretty obnoxious, and trying to talk with chat reps about development issues with this product is pointless. They have written into this product that it can't be stopped as a service. It's super annoying when products strong-arm my computer. They're not paying for this computer and shouldn't arbitrarily decide to keep their product running no matter what.

Right now, it's having an issue, and I don't like rebooting my machine because I can't stop a service. That should NOT happen! I have too much going on to save all my work and reboot when aspects of Norton 360 have problems. I know stopping & restarting Norton Security would most likely solve the issue, but STOP/START is greyed-out in Services.

As a former software developer, I know they're making changes to this software seamlessly, which causes issues we don't know about. If they were transparent, it would go a long way, but they aren't. I don't like being used as a beta-tester, but it's how software is being released these days. Don't prevent us from troubleshooting our own machines.

Be sure you are using a Windows admin user account.  You might also need a couple of LiveUpdate runs and system restarts to get the update completed.

What ever is going on with this new roll-out of Norton 360 Premium that recently updated it is NOT working right!

I can't turn "Tamper Protection" off, it keeps ignoring my commands and the "flash" screen for "tour" will not let me skip

or minimize the flash screen! This became a real problem when trying to do a "system restore" (failed twice) message is Norton file failed move operation! Six hours wasted! Screenshot_1_0.jpg

It wasn't off, it was stuck turning on and wouldn't go off or on. Yes, I always open and close My Norton because of VPN.  VPN doesn't stay on, so I usually keep My Norton open while using it because I have to turn it back on.  I also have to turn VPN on and off, because lots of websites hate that thing and there's a fight we're stuck in the middle of, i.e., Norton doesn't communicate with businesses who feel like blocking opening a webpage because of its existence.  Interesting they know when VPN's are being utilized.  Anyway, when I turn it off, I close My Norton.  My hunches, which are fairly accurate, were to turn the service off & back on, not open and close the application.  Rebooting does the same thing, but I do not like rebooting my machine for stuck processes; only when I've installed new software or reinstalled old programs.

Oh, and the process controlling Norton (NortonSecurity.exe) won't quit, either.  I get an access error trying to do so with my Task Manager.  My account is always Administrator.  They're doing everything to keep me from turning it off.  Considering how glitchy VPN is, they really need to change that.  I know more about my machine than Norton can possibly imagine; I'm not a novice user.

Yes, I understand the purpose of Forums. I participate in tons of them, even though I don't like to.  I never come in them for simple issues, and Norton tech support is marginal at best.  I don't like having my time wasted by blokes who just meddle with my machine or go in circles during the chat.

When you notice the VPN has turned off, have you tried opening your 360 and turning it back on? That should work without having to fuss with services and the Norton Tamper Protection feature.

FYI  These forums are predominantly user to user help. Even the Gurus are just users like you that volunteer our time to try to help from our experience with the Norton products. The few employees here are identified by a red tag by their avatar, and they are generally just administrators for the forum who can pass things along to the relevant department if necessary.

I was just curious whether you worked for Norton or elsewhere. I've been in the industry since 1978 and almost worked for Microsoft as a developer in 1995. I took a contract in the machine I specialized in and was on my way there when I got the call from MS. I started in hardware and moved to software during my career. Anyway, I'm in my browser when VPN starts acting up, have a gazillion tabs open, other things running, and documents open. No other software is running. I use VPN for a reason, and when it screws up, my IP address returns to where I live. So, it was holding up work I was doing on the internet. I also write for Medium. Anyway, it's inconvenient not to be able to jolt that service back to life without rebooting my machine. That does work, but is as bad as CTRL-ALT-DEL in the old days.

VPN disables itself all the time, and I'm merely trying to stop the service and restart it. I'm not sure we're talking apples & apples; more like apples & oranges. So that feature will allow me to stop/start Norton Services in services? That's all I wanted to do, which isn't special on my machine. If VPN didn't act up so much, I wouldn't be needing to do this at all.

They have written into this product that it can't be stopped as a service

You can override this feature by turning off the Norton Product Tamper Protection feature in Administrative Settings. This is not recommended as a permanent change as noted by SoulAsylum. If you can disable a service or feature of Norton, so could any malware that might slip by all your protections. Your choice.

No!! I do not work for Norton. I AM a certified Microsoft Professional with 30 + years of experience, trying to assist. I'll ask an Admin who does work for Norton to jump into the thread, hopefully they can give you a palable answer that will be suitable. Stay safe and healthy!! @Sunil_GA

That is SO not true. I am the administrator of my machine, a computer expert, and nobody should man-handle my machine. I can make it so it starts manually, then it has no choice but for STOP/START to show up. Nonsense! If that's the best you've got, keep it moving. I'm paying for this product AND my computer. This isn't the only product I have on my machine; not by a long-shot.

Specific issue is VPN getting stuck. That thing is flimsy, and I hate coming into forums, because people think they know more than I do about computers, my machine and my software. I know how they are supposed to behave, and anything I do on my machine isn't exposed to outsiders. I have complained about the VPN to tech support, and they never know what to do; not ever. Poking around on my machine when the problem is their server. Ummmmm, never again! Last one I kicked off my machine, because they don't know what they're doing. The problem disappeared later that night, so it was Norton's server. I did nothing and neither did the tech support snoopers. They have no clue what developers are doing with the server.

Rebooting was the only way to get Norton Service to reset the VPN. This has nothing to do with folders. Do you work for Norton?

Hello KingRay57. If a product can have its tamper protection by-passed by the user that would be a serious security issue for the company providing the software, legally if for no other reason. Outside entities look for vulnerabilities, and there are more than a few issues with Windows that outside entities actively look for which Norton protects from. The issue isn't Norton taking over your machines, its a matter of providing the services they offered as stated in your purchase agreement.

What is the specific issue with having to save your work and reboot? Have you excluded your development folders in Norton settings so it won't detect those work changes? Please give us a bit more information to work with so that we can try to provide a solution for you.
