Norton Software Updater shows I have 4 applcations that need updating, but when I click on to update nothing happens. I called two times, but I was told I have all the available updates. If I really do, why am I getting the message I have 4 availalble updates? I am paying for protection, but the messages I am getting don’t show this. I just recently renewed my subscripton…

Hello Holly. The community recommends not using Software Updater as it can be inaccurate resulting in installing the wrong updates. Please use the OEM ( manufacturer ) of your software for updates.
I’m sorry, but I don’t understand who I should contact…These are listed: Adobe Shockwave Player, Skype, Windows Defender, and Windows Media Player. I don’t need Windows Defender as I have Norton. I don’t want Skype, but would like Windows MediaPlayer and possibly AdobeShockwave Player.
Is it safe to not update them as two are listed as high risk, Adobe Shockwave Player and Windows Defender (not using)? I do use Windows Media Player and also don’t use Skype.
FWIW!! I still use Windows Media Player without issues due to the protection of Norton. One thing of note regarding WMP is digital rights management will be a thing of the past soon, Microsoft will discontinue DRM which may cause copyright protected material to no longer play for legacy (older versions) of Windows and MP.
Windows Defender is a part of Windows itself. With Norton installed Norton takes over many of its functions but Defender remains a part of Windows itself. Do not update it with software updater.
Skype and Adobe shockwave player can be removed. Don’t update those with Software Updater as well.
Make sure Auto Update is disabled. Updater still runs & advises items need updating - do not update for reasons listed above. I had it set to OFF but it still updated a couple of apps and a Windows Preview Update. Checking settings, these still showed Auto Update as OFF. No way apparently of turning it OF - OFF
One of the things that is totally not needed with any AV is a software updater not within its ecosystem. Out of all the things that was taken away from 360. This is the bloatware thats left in? Just terrible.
No AV software should update any other software. Whether its system, or driver, etc. Why have this running taking up resources when Windows does it anyway? Whether its for inexperienced users or not. It still just as bad.
Remember auto update is the system not the scanning and remember also that to always disable the update not from norton then you dont now where the driver is from
