Norton Toolbar for Firefox 5

You say the patch is available through liveupdate but I have not received it yet. I just updated and even reinstalled firefox 5, but toolbar is still disabled.

Hi Lance:

Could you look through your LiveUpdate history to see if the patch was delivered?  In NIS, you click on the History link and then select "LiveUpdate" from the dropdown list.  Most people received the patch around July 6th or 7th, so you'll have to check the details of a few LiveUpdates around those dates and try to find one that has "Norton Product Update" listed under Total Updates Applied and says "Yes" for Re-boot Required" (see attached .jpg).

NIS Product Update 07 Jul 2011.jpg

Please let us know if you can find this product update in your LiveUpdate History as well as the versions of your Norton add-ons in Firefox 5.0 (Tools | Add-ons | Extensions).  If the NIS product update was delivered you should have Norton Toolbar 2011.7.0.8 and IPS v. 3.0 in your Firefox add-ons as shown in noghere's post here.

Many of the people in this thread, including myself, have had problems with the Norton Toolbar after installing/upgrading to Firefox 5.0.  It's possible that re-installing Firefox 5.0 got your Firefox profile out of synch again.

Here it is:

Hi gillmore2011:

Firefox v. 5.0.1 was released on 12-Jul-2011, but according to the change log here on FileHippo this update includes fixes for Apple's Mac OS X 10.x.  If you download a fresh copy of Firefox from FileHippo or from the mozilla.com website here you'll get v. 5.0.1.

I run Firefox 5.0.0 on Windows Vista 32-bit and when I try a manual update (Help | About Firefox | Check For Updates) I'm still told that Firefox is up to date. It's possible that they aren't pushing FF 5.0.1 to Windows users yet.

I post again the image. All NIS add_ons work fine on FF 5.0.1 too:

Firstly apologies if this buts in to ongoing exchange but seemed like this thread was the right place to shout for help.

I have followed all 21 pages of this thread and tried every suggestion to have Norton Toolbar enabled in my Firefox 5.0.1. This includes every combination of installing NIS 2011(repeatedly doing live update to ensure I get the Norton fix) & Firefox, . I do have Symantec IPS 3.0 enabled but that's it. I tried deleting extensions.sqlite. Any further ideas or is that it?

Same here. No reason to force it to 5.0.1 since it supposely only updates for Mac OS. FF 6 will be out next Month so no big deal.

Jim

Firefox 5.0.1 is available for release channel users.  It is not in general release yet, but it looks like it will be very soon.

If you are still unable to see the toolbar in Firefox, create a new Firefox profile.  If the toolbar is working in the new profile, you can copy over your bookmarks, etc from the old one

Thanks for suggesting new profile. Have tried that. No go.

hes right folks update to ff 5.01  is good with the norton upgrade thanks

Just purchased and install NIS 2011 v18.6.0.29.... all ran smoothly until I upgraded to Firefox 5.0.1 today on my laptop (windows 7 64bit) and pc (windows XP)...In both instances both my norton toolbar and ISP have been labled as incompatible and been disabled. I've gone through all the updates and can't find where there's been any problems with installations since July 10 when I first installed NIS.....My Toobar is Norton Toolbar 5.6 and the IPS is 2.0...

I just ran live update again and it indicates I have everything

HELP

I finally did a complete uninstall of NIS using Revo Uninstaller Pro........Rebooted the computer, Reinstall NIS 2011, Ran Liveupdates, rebooted, ran live updates again and VIOLA when I opened my Firefox Browser the toolbar with the UPDATED versions was installed and all is well.

I had previously saved the NIS installer , NIS Product Key prior to doing any of this...So I didn't have to open my Firefox Browser until the entire process was completed.

Hope this hleps''

Tom, your solution worked perfectly for me. Thank you!

Willythemac, good angle. Followed your method but used Norton Removal Tool. Still no go.

Hi SafeQuest:

Have you tried installing the Firefox extension Add-on Compatibility Reporter (ACR) v. 0.8.7 (for download from Mozilla here)?  This add-on will disable Firefox's built-in compatibility checking for plug-ins and extensions.  You may have to re-start Firefox a few times (or possibly re-boot your computer) before ACR kicks in, but this might allow you to re-enable your Norton Toolbar v. 2011.7.0.8 and IPS v. 3.0 extensions.

The drawback of installing the ACR extension is that it will also turn off Firefox's built-in compatibility checking for all your other Firefox add-ons, but if this is a concern you can disable or uninstall ACR from the Firefox Add-on Manager (Tools | Add-ons | Extensions) and return to your "normal" Firefox compatibility checking.  If you can re-activate your Norton Toolbar while ACR is enabled at least you'll know that the problem probably has something to do with your Firefox profile.

Thanks for suggestion. Unfortunately, my Norton Toolbar doesn't make it to the Extensions list even as 'disabled'.

Hi SafeQuest:

Are you running NIS 2011 v. 18.6.0.29 on a Windows operating system? If you have a Windows OS, does your Norton Toolbar work correctly if you use Internet Explorer as your browser?

I was always able to get the Norton Toolbar to work with IE9 on my computer, even when it wouldn't work in Firefox 5.0. I've attached a .jpg of my IE9 add-on manager (Tools | Manage Add-ons | Toolbars and Extensions) that shows the Norton Toolbar add-on listed under Symantec Corporation.

I'm still in the same spot I was a month ago. Two of my computers moved to FF5, got the NIS update and everything works fine. The third computer running quite similar software does not work. All are running XP Pro with the Service Pack 3.

I backed down to the earlier version of FF in June to let this settle down figuring that the remaining issues with getting the NIS upgrades to work would be worked out. Apparently not. I even tried reinstalling the latest NIS from the Norton website. Still no go.

The version number of the dll noted in earlier posts still shows the older version, so obviously NIS has not done the program update. I find no reference to program update in the History (that is a real pain to go through, btw).

I don't have time to keep spending on this. I think it is unreasonable to assume that just because this is software that somehow I'm supposed to spend hours trying to make it work correctly. There should be a one step solution if the auto update doesn't work. Go to this link and force the upgrade. Why is that so hard?

It would be easy to blame FF for this and I am not at all upset that NIS wasn't instantly compatible with FF5. But a month or so later with an upgrade to make it compatible available, it is now NIS that is failing to upgrade properly.

While I understand that the upgrade worked for most people / most computers, this thread indicates that it did not work properly for many, many people. You can't tell me that Norton's tech people cannot produce a patch that forces the upgrade.

Hi tiehman,

Have you tried creating a new Firefox profile to see if the proper Norton Toolbar extension shows up there?  It takes only a few minutes and will tell you if this is a profile problem or a different issue.  If the new profile works, you can import your bookmarks and cookies, etc. from the old profile (just don't import the extensions!).

Imacri. Thanks for suggestion. Have IE 9 running. No sign of Norton Toolbar in Add-on Manager. Do you think it possible that Norton Live Update is failing to load the revised toolbar version?
