Ever since Norton updated [24.10.9535 (build 24.10.9535.881)], my modem logs display “dnsmasq[5579]: Maximum number of concurrent DNS queries reached (max: 150)” just about every time I turn on / restart my computer (connected via ethernet).
I’ve tried “ipconfig /flushdns” and it still happens. Using “ipconfig /displaydns” at startup show a BUNCH of “Avast” based hits.
I uninstalled (NRnR) Norton 360 and went into the modem logs and it stopped. I reinstalled Norton 360 and the Maximum number of concurrent DNS queries reached (max: 150) started up again.
So, I just downloaded the remover via the link you mentioned and ran it. The uninstall process looked exactly the same as using the NRnR uninstaller (just like the image you posted).
Again, after uninstalling Norton 360, the “Maximum number of concurrent DNS queries reached (max: 150)” stopped. I reinstalled by going to my.Norton.com, then clicking on Download from the dashboard. The issue starts back up again.
It doesn’t seem to be causing any internet issues (yet) but its concerning to me because it has never done this before. And it only just started after the v24 update.
A couple of days ago, I tried to block the the hits that I could catch via “ipconfig /displaydns”. It worked and stopped the … (max: 150) from happening, but it slowed Norton’s “loading” with “Buffering” like circles when starting the App. It wasn’t worth it, so I removed the blocks. Here are the hits I recorded and tried to block:
I don’t know if it’s the streaming defs or not. I don’t know what Norton does in the background when the computer starts up. It happens the instant I get into Windows via turning the computer on / restart.
@aenigma The initial install/upgrade on the first machine I got it on was much the same as yours. With one exception. After the initial install, manually running live updates until no other updates were offered and reboot again, I was seeing processes all over the place. Once the initial installation fiasco was done, and since, I see these processes running on my daily machine at cold startup.
I set the Norton VPN in system services to “manual” start to prevent it from running at bootup.
Sure is. It slows down the system now. My popups dont even load quick. They come up very slow and choppy. Now we have all these processes running. Product not working.
This is def a step backward with what Symantec was doing and how easy/lite it was on the system. This avast software really has to go.
Can you get a screenshot of processes running in your Task Manager at next bootup? That would help going forward. Once you have logged in just open task manager, Ctrl+Alt+Delete keys at the same time and select Task Manager.
So after doing a little more testing, the … (max: 150) also happens when I click on “Run Smart Scan”.
