Norton Utilities 14 Issues

Hi, Everyone,

I've noticed with the Version 14.5.0.116 that it does not record Registry Changes, as the Notification did not appear when I was installing Updates yesterday and today.  Just wondering if this is a Known Issue, or a new one.

Also, is there a Log where all the Changes Norton Utilities has made available from the U.I.?  If not, it would be nice if this was added, like in Norton SystemWorks.

Hi Floating_Red,

Actually I think this is covered. From the main NU window please select Administer then Settings. Under the General tab you will see an option to Open Log Folder. This will bring up a Windows Explorer window opened to the directory where the various logs are stored. Look at the scan.log file, it holds information related to the last Registry scan. I don't believe you get a full history of all previous scans but you can get the results of the last scan. Browse through the other log files so you can see what they have.

For the Registry Monitoring piece, please select Monitor from the Settings page. Ensure that Enable Registry Monitor is checked off. Above that you will see an option for Popup Notification will appear after.... captured events. You can select the number of registry events which would occur before you are notified. The default is 50 events (registry modifications).

Hope this helps.

Hi, Allen,

Thank-you for the Reply and all the information provided, however, I have the Notification Set to "1", and has been for quite a while now, and still there was no Pop-Up Notifications when I was Installing Updates, as already mentioned.  I think it should be set at "1", because each un-install or install may cause problems for you.  With regards to the Log Files, it would be nice if everything was listed in one Log File instead of having Multiple Logs.  And the Log shows what Version of H.U. 14 you have installed, and where it is Located (File Path), and does not show what was Repaired during each Scan.

Hi Floating_Red,

I agree the logs could probably use a bit more detail, but I actually do like the fact that they keep different types of scans in different log files because sometimes you may wish to look just for errors found during a Registry Scan and not anything else. I guess the action take is implicit when it comes to Registry Scan because the only actions you can choose are either Keep or Delete. Probably should be explicitly stated though, no disagreement.

As far as the Registry Monitor goes I will have to do some more testing on that one. I was using Registry Mechanic for at least a year and a half before moving to NU and it always notified me of registry changes. As you probably know Symantec took over PC Tools and the Registry clean and defrag are actually the engine from Registry Mechanic. Pretty baffling if Symantec broke something which I know for 100% fact worked with Registry Mechanic. :smileysad: Again I'll do some more testing on this as well.

Thanks

Allen
