Norton Utilities 15 compact registry on Windows 7 Professional resulted in blue screen. I tried "Last Known Good Configuration" which did not work. Startup Repair and System Restore not working either. How can I recover the system or rebuild registry without having to do a reinstall of OS?>
Tried that as well with same result, unable to repair. I have tried to find back up registry through DOS and there is no C or D drive found and no usb device is working. Looks like entire registry is FUBAR.
DOS isn't going to help you because it can't access NTFS drives.
You need to be able to navigate to the folder: C:\Windows\System32\Config
And look for files that have the extention .rmbac those would be the registry backups that NU should have made before optimizing the registry.
The registry hives are called: Software, System, Security, Sam, and Default. You want to look for a matching set of these files with the .rmbac extentions.
To get to that location you need to be able to use the command prompt from a startup repair disk or Windows 7 installation disk. (See the screen shot above but use the option to open a command prompt).
If you don't have such a disk, you could also use another Windows PE disk or a linux CD
