Hi,
I am using Norton Utilities V 15.0.0.124 Engine 3.0.0.854 Framework 3.0.0.700 on a HP Pavilion e9200z with Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit SP1.
My problem is I have one administrator account, I'll call Peter, that I used to setup the computer, a second administrator account that I created, I'll call Paul, with the Peter account, and a standard user account, that I WON'T call Mary that I created with the Paul account. When I am using the "NOT Mary" account which is 95% of the time.
I have Norton Utilities shortcut in my taskbar and when I click on it the UAC window pops open and the two admin. names with the spots to enter the password for either one is there. The default is the Paul's admin. account that I created. Just curious why it doesn't pick the first one. Anyways... I always go with the default and run the cleaner for the temp. files. Also the registry error checker. Well when I am doing a lot of changes to my computer I make my "NOT Mary" account, a 3rd admin. account and re-boot and then I close my internet connection. The problem is Norton Utilities will only find registry errors some of the times when the account is a standard account, under Paul's privileges, but sometimes I get a "clean registry" message, Then I switch the "NOT Mary" account to an Admin. account and now she doesn't need any permissions BUT now it finds temp. files in Google chrome which I only have installed under the "NOT Mary" account and it finds registry errors. Both of which it didn't find when "NOT Mary was a standard user. I didn't clean the items or fix the registry errors. I changed the "NOT Mary" account back and forth from standard to admin. re-booting each time and repeating the process with the same results. I don't want to have to make "NOT Mary" an admin. Every time I want to use Norton Utilities.
Thanks
thunderechoes!
is there a way where you can explain your problem without Peters, Pauls and NOT Marys?

Hi,
Thanks for responding.
I have 3 user accounts on my computer. Two of them are "Administrator User Accounts" one is a "Standard User Account". I am having a problem running Norton Utilities 15 when I am logged in, as the "Standard User Account" since I Windows 7 doesn't allow you to run programs that make changes to the computer, like Norton Utilities, when I am logged in under the "Standard User Account" I have to enter either enter my password for one of the "Administrator User Accounts" or log in under the "Administrator User Account".
I have a shortcut pinned to my taskbar for Norton Utilities, when I choose to stay logged in under the "Standard User Account" and click on the shortcut in the taskbar the UAC (User Account Control dialog box) displays asking me if I want to allow Norton Utilities to make changes to my computer if so I must enter "Administrator User Account's" password to continue. So, when I enter the password and do the scan it finds very few if any errors.
Here is my problem. I use the "Standard User Account" 95% of the time for security... However when I am going to make a lot of changes to my computer;
1.) I log in under one of the accounts that have always been and will always be an "Administrator User Accounts"
2.) I make the "Standard User Account" an "Administrator User Account" temporarily, that way I can make the changes to that account without any warning dialogs or password requests from Window's UAC.
3.) I re-boot and then do a registry scan with Norton Utilities. I choose to run Norton Utilities as a check to make sure my account is an "Administrator" account like I want. I know that it is an "Administrator Account" now because there is no UAC interference.
4.) I do the scan and find errors that weren't there when I did a scan minutes earlier when the account was a "Standard User Account".
5.) So, I close the scan without repairing the errors; change the account back to a "Standard User Account" re-boot log in under the standard user re-run the scan using the Administrator password and the errors are not there.
So, I figure maybe they got repaired... So I go through steps 1 through 5 several times and the same results.
The bottom line is Something in the way Windows 7 and or Norton Utilities 15 is designed is preventing me from seeing those registry errors as "Standard User Account" "Running a program as Administrator" I want to be able to do the scan and find the errors without having to make my "Standard" account an "Administrator" account.
Thanks
Hi ThunderEchoes,
I think you have answered your own question. Norton Utilities works best with an administrator account.
You can automate NU15 to do scans when you log in, daily, or weekly. To find this setting open NU15 while logged in as an administrator > Administrator > Settings > Scheduler. Under Privacy you can select "Globally Clean Internet Explorer tracks". This will clean I.E.. Explorer history for all users. This includes History, Cookies and Temporary Internet Files.
I hope this helps.
Dave.
Hi Dave,
Thanks for responding.
I didn't know you could schedule tasks. That is a good feature. Thanks for the tip.
