NortonUI.exe crashing repeatedly

Hey all,

Over the last few weeks or so this problem has been getting progressively worse. It started with my mouse/keyboard losing focus because something was opening /closing in the background and it would only happen every few minutes or so. It then progressed to every 30 seconds and just last night it was happening rapid-fire, multiple times a second where I couldn’t even use my PC. These logs from Process Monitor were taken just last night in a matter of 3 seconds:

Here is the full detail of the command being ran:

Any idea what this is and how to disable it? I have already tried removing Norton using the NRnR.exe tool multiple times but it just keeps coming back after a few hours of stability. I’m at my wits end.

Here are some log entries I see in this file: C:\Users\WildPyro\AppData\Roaming\Norton\Antivirus\log\cef_log.txt

The screenshot you posted shows GL swiftshader, that is a browser setting that “mimics” a GPU, specific to Chromium based browsers. Please review the articles below for more in depth information.

Thanks for the reply. I took some time and read over those articles. So if I’m understanding this correctly, the only way to stop the constant crashing in the background is to (temporarily) disable GPU acceleration in my browser? This is less than ideal because I often stream media through Plex and monitor cameras around my house/business constantly. I assume that these processes would run smoother with GPU accel enabled. I also use Edge for certain tasks as well (Mostly admin related things) Does GPU acceleration need to be disabled on this browser as well?

Instead of going the browser route, is there anyway I can force NortonUI.exe to start with any specific flags that prevent this behavior from happening? The real problem I’m having right now is with Norton, not my browsers. Currently, everything is working just fine on all of them.

I forgot to mention my browsers and my graphics card drivers are both currently up to date:
Chrome: v142.0.7444.163
GPU: Adrenalin v25.11.1

Appreciate all the help thus far!

I use Opera GX which is Chromium based, it too has an acceleration setting which I keep disabled to prevent issues like the one you are experiencing. Users with different hardware and usage types may not become affected, while some will. My suggestion, as a test would be to disable GPU acceleration, reboot the computer and allow time to recheck for the issue persisting.

Edited: I use a dedicate GPU in this computer which performs the GPU acceleration at the system level vice a browser, zero issues.

Thanks, I turned it off and rebooted. The toggle was the same exact wording in Chrome, I found it in Settings>System. I’ll let you know how I turn out!
