Not protected by SONAR

While reading messages here got the flash that I had a problem. Followed the prompts and the quick fix didn't solve the problem. Suggested doing the R and R routine [that's remove and reinstall]. Did so. Ran updates and checked to see if I was current, not quite so ran LU again and all appeared to be well. All of that was about 30 minutes ago. The same error just presented itself again.

Suggestions? I've already considered a large hammer and some explosives but had to reject them - wife's asleep.:smileywink:

Hello Dick

What was the problem being reported? What does it say in history?

The error number was 3039.69638 in 360 ran Malwarebytes no error, ran full scan no error

rebooted into another drive with NIS2011 loaded ran scans on the above drive and NIS reported the same error

error 10057, module 3040  oX80641006

no longer able to boot machine. running NBRT on it now will report later on results

Shut down system overnight, ran NBRT and scanned 1,250,00 + items and found nothing. Rebooted and am on the primary drive now. All seems well, we shall see.

Update:

Reboot with or without running LU first eliminates the problem for 10 minutes. Then it's back.

Have run SAS from safe mode and eliminated stuff. Have run Malwarebytes from safe mode and eliminated stuff. Got a few more to run so will report back later.

Hello Dick

Was your computer doing anything else besides reading these Forum posts at the time? I think it's very unlikely that you caught some sort of virus or malware from  just reading posts in the Forum.

Nope, I don't think it originated here either. It is interesting that after a reboot it takes 10 minutes for it to return. A few safe mode scans turned up a number of things which have been removed but it is still with me :smileysad:

Here's the KB article on the error code:

Thanks.

Did it by the numbers and no change :smileysad:

Previous safe mode scans by Malwarebytes and SAS - nothing found

Next step?

Hi Dick,

By design both the NRnR and the NRT leave some files behind, anticipating a re-installation.

I would suggest a full removal of the product.

Although some of these procedures may seem redundant, please execute each step.

    • Download and Save the Norton Removal Tool to your desktop.
    • Download and Save Norton 360v5 Standard to your desktop.
    • If you have N360v5 Premiere with 25 GB online storage, download from here
    • Be sure your Local Backups are stored on external media or uploaded to Online Storage to ensure they remain intact
    • For temporary protection, turn on your Windows Firewall
    • Back up your Identity Safe Data to a convenient location. Have your product key handy
    • Be sure to jot down any passwords used with 360 (Backup and Identity Safe)
    • Uninstall your current Norton Version via Add-Remove Programs or Programs and Features
    • If prompted, select the option to Remove all user data... - see image from NIS 2011 here
    • Restart your computer when prompted
    • After the restart, run the Norton Removal Tool
    • Restart your computer when prompted
    • Right click on the N360 Installer and select “Run As Administrator” (XP users just double click)
    • If prompted, enter your product key and set up your Norton account
    • Check that Norton has turned OFF the Windows Firewall
    • Run Live Update a few times until no more definitions are available.

For your convenience I have attached printable instructions.

Have a read of this thread >Here< it might throw a bit of light on the issue.

Deric

Phew!  That was a long read, Deric!

If I am reading it correctly, your issue was resolved by re-imaging and others found the issue was fixed after an update was issued, correct?

In any event, the parameters for Dick's problem may be a bit different as he notes that two on-demand scanners removed some undefined items.

Many times, these issues can be fixed by performing the complete uninstall as opposed to just running the NRT.

Thanks for the link, though!

Capture 3.JPGYes it was a long one, but funnily enough I have just had the first warning from my NIS 2011 that Sonar has dropped out would you believe. see pic.

It is definitely the interaction with the newer version of NIS with the older one (NIS 2011) on a Dual or Multi boot machine and it won't be resolved till testing has stopped.

Deric

Phil_D,

A variation of this problem appeared when we were testing NIS2011 while running NIS2010. The symptom was different but the result was similar. [old age may be setting in so the years may be off]

While the 'problem' did force me to do some serious housecleaning it did nothing to resolve the problem. I have done the R/R bit on all three programs and can reproduce the SONAR shutdown after ten minutes, almost to the second, on either NIS2011 or 360. NIS2012 public beta seems fat, dumb and happy through it all. Once NIS/NAV2012 replaces the 2011 versions our only concern will be 360. I doubt that many users, other than testers will be running different Norton programs on a dual/multi-boot system so there shouldn't be many complaints generated. And, it might provide the programmers with an interesting puzzle to solve between product cycles :smileywink:

[time to duck and run]

Dick,

I think that about sums it up mate, I agree, spot on. I will duck out the way now.
