Notron Security Suite v5 Registry Cleaner screws up BTTray

After I run the Registry Cleaner in my copy of the Norton Security Suite I get the following pop up message in Windows ~10 minutes after I log in.

BTTray

ERROR: Unable to start the Bluetooth stack service

.This error will continue to pop up until I re install my Bluetooth receiver driver.   This error will not appear again until I unless I run the Registry Cleaner in Norton Security Suite.   I have isolated this issue to the Registry Cleaner only.   If you Google search this error you will see that other users have also isolated this problem to the Registry Cleaner.   Bottom line is that it appears the Registry Cleaner is removing a key that it needed by BTTray.   This error also happened in the previous release of Norton Security Suite.    Attached are the logs of the Registry Cleaner.

Hi jcatelli.

Where did you get this Bluetooth receiver driver and its BTTray software? Is it available for download so we Symantec can reproduce and fix this problem? Also, which Windows do you have (32-bit/64-bit, XP/Vista/7, edition, etc.)?

Thank you in advance.

Pi,

Thanks for the follow up.

The computer I am using is a Dell Studio XPS 1645.   The Bluetooth receiver in the computer is Dell Wireless 370 Bluetooth Mini-card and the driver is located at the following website (http://support.dell.com/support/downloads/download.aspx?c=us&cs=19&l=en&s=dhs&releaseid=R226750&SystemID=studio1555&servicetag=&os=W764%20&osl=en&deviceid=16166&devlib=0&typecnt=0&vercnt=1&catid=-1&impid=-1&formatcnt=0&libid=5&typeid=-1&dateid=-1&formatid=-1&source=-1&fileid=325098).   The operating system on this computer is Windows 7 SP 1 64-bit.

BTTray was installed as part of the driver.   It appears that BTTray is Widcomm's Bluetooth Tray Application.   I don't know what it does.

Hi,

Not sure if this is of any help, but I use Norton 360 V5 (HP Envy Win 7 64bit) and the BT Tray error is definitely a result of the inbuilt Registry Cleaner. I have fixed repeatedly the error and then re-run the cleaner and as sure as night follows day the error reappears.

Before messing myself, Norton support tried to help, but every fix still eventually through up the error so....

Solution: Fix and don't run the cleaner - yes, hardly a solution I know.

As for fixing the problem - or what worked for me (N.B. not sure if it will work for all PC models):

Go to Start and type "msconfig". Select the "start" tab in the dialog box that opens up. Scroll down to the the line BT Software or equivalent (might say BT Tray on some) and untick the box. Select OK and reboot your system. Depending on your PC manufacturer go to their support & drivers section and download the Bluetooth software that is appropriate to your make and model and reinstall. You may have to re-boot after this.

It then works as before and no error. I would save the downloaded driver in case you get tempted (or forget) to run the registry cleaner again and it all goes BT Tray error.

I did try just re-installing the driver but it did not clear the error so hence the msconfig route

Cheers,

Paul

I am having problems installing this software driver onto a clean 64-bit Windows 7 UE machine (not a Dell brand). Bluetooth Software's dialog box says "Activate Bluetooth using Wireless Switch" with a [Cancel Installation] button. Does this program work with a special Bluetooth device or can any Bluetooth devices be used which I will have to locate?

Also, your Registry Cleanup1.txt 30 KB attachment is unreadable (not a text file).

Pi,

I beleive you will need to have the Dell Wireless 370 Bluetooth radio in your system in order to install the driver.

Also I just clicked on the link to the .txt file in my orginal post and it opened fine for me in Google Chrome.   This txt file was a result of the log export function in the security suite.   The forum system would not allow me to upload a mcg file which is the other export option

Thanks. I will have to see if there are any Dell systems (your link shows a list of machines) with this specific wireless device, so I can install this driver and its software. Also, I was able to read your text file attachment after saving it locally first.

If anyone else have the same registry issue with something else, then please kindly feel free to post in here about it (device, model, brand, URL to get the software, etc.).
