I just installed and am running NIS 2009 on an XP Media Edition computer. I use the Novell Client for Windows 4.91 SP5 to log in to my Novell NetWare 6 network. Since installing NIS, with its Firewall enabled, when I attempt to log in to NetWare (at startup), the client churns for a few minutes trying to find the tree, but fails, and asks me to login to to Windows only. In the client's three Advanced tab selections, I can select Trees to search for one, and it eventually seems to find my tree, but after a long delay. If I then try to select either of the other two choices, Servers or Contexts, I get a message that says Unable to Access the Tree. And I am still unable to log in, even though it seems to be able to find the tree after a very long (several minutes) delay.
What I can do is log in to Windows only (un-networked), disable the firewall, shut down and restart, and the client then logs in successfully while the firewall is disabled. I then have to re-enable my NIS firewall after Windows starts up. This tedious process is not an acceptable alternative, and leaves my system vulnerable for at least a short time. There must be firewall settings that I can make to overcome this problem, but I am at a loss.
For what it's worth, my Novell server has already been set up as a fully Trusted component in my local network settings in NIS, so that is not the issue. And I have been able to log in successfully with this client with older versions of NIS, just not the 2009 version.
Any help would be much appreciated, especially if it works!!!
