NPE.exe stuck on Checking for New Version screen & unable to end task

After updating my Norton Internet Security to the latest version, I was able to further scan using the Power Eraser once.  

 

Now whenever I attempt to use NPE, it remains on the 'Checking for New Version' screen and does not proceed further. I am unable to end process in task manager, as it brings up the Unable to Terminate Process error message: "The operation could not be completed. Access denied."

 

 

If I try to right-click the program on taskbar and 'Close window', it remains stuck on the screen although the message changes to 'Please Wait...' instead of 'checking for new version'.

 

I either have to restart the computer or otherwise, leave it stuck on the 'checking for new version' screen.  Is this a known issue with NPE or can anything be done to avoid the program checking for new version (after EULA acceptance) each time it is started?

Can you please upload the NPETraceSession.etl and NPETraceSessionBoot.etl files from C:\Users\<UserName>\AppData\Local\NPE folder for us to analyse the issue?

You might get a log here as well if he can get the machine to boot again.

Just wanted to bring to your attention that angeloncall reported the same problem here on 23-Dec-2013 about NPE getting stuck at the "checking for new version" screen.  At the time I assumed NPE was just having a problem connecting to the backend Symantec servers to check for an update, and I'd be interested to know if huggi3s' NPE trace files point to another cause.

yes, lets see. there might be two reasons one is server down and another one can be intermitent n/w connection.
