I have a number of these. Directory of c:\Program Files\Common Files\Symantec Shared\VirusDefs\20131124.019 Directory of c:\Program Files\Common Files\Symantec Shared\VirusDefs\20120210.021 Directory of c:\Program Files\Common Files\Symantec Shared\VirusDefs\tmp1034.tmp Directory of c:\Program Files\Common Files\Symantec Shared\VirusDefs\tmp275f.tmp from 1/31/2010
On another response I see: "Don't delete the files from VirusDefs folder directly as it may open your
computer to more vulnerabilities."
From above, some of these directories are nearly 4 years old with same files as current directories. How
can these all be needed. These files are killing my PC. I'm spending all my time trying to clear enough
off/compress files to get live update to update. HELP !
One way to deal with the issue is to completely remove Norton and reinstall Norton this needs a certain process to be performed so repost for instructions. Or wait a while to see what other people post
Do you use identity safe/vault and is it local or online?
What is the name of the Norton product and the version number, you can find this by clicking the Norton icon, click support, hover over, about, on the window that opens, the second line down is the version number.
Would you like to reinstall the version you have another version or the latest version, which is 21.1.0.18, it is a free upgrade if you have a current subscription.
What service pack is on the computer, you can find this by right clicking computer in the left hand pane of windows explorer then click properties?
Product is Norton 360; version 2.5.0.5; been using 'Norton' on this PC for 8 years; just keep renewing & Norton/Symantec does whatever it does regarding 'updating'. So, trying to uninstall & reload isn't possible; no disks, etc. If I have to 'reload', might as well try a different product; I have Trend on another & works so far w/o problems.
Running XP; SP3.
I also see a bunch of symantec directories ending in .tmp, like:
Directory of c:\Program Files\Common Files\Symantec Shared\SymcData\nco1.0defs\tmp1ab9.tmp
Directory of c:\Program Files\Common Files\Symantec Shared\SymcData\nco1.0defs\tmp2040.tmp
Any clue it these are really 'temp' working files?
There are various links to down load versions of Norton available but the RAM on the computer could be a significant factor can you repost with the RAM on the computer and is the version you currently have standard or premier?
As you said in your first post it could compromise the Norton product by deleting files and as you have so many it could be easy to delete the wrong ones.
As you are suggesting a change in security products why not try an upgrade to a more recent version of Norton to see if it works, its up to you though just a suggestion.
