I just got my first laptop. Yes, I'm older- no kids to help me here. I was told some Norton antivirus came with my laptop. 5 days ago a pop up told me "you only have 1 day left of virus protection!" I gave Norton my charge card- they charged me, and THEN a screen pops up that says I already have Norton protection and that it is, in fact better. Meanwhile the pop ups keep coming "you have no virus protection!!" combined with a little box that pops up at the bottom right that says "you have turned off your spyware" What!?
So I go back & try to install more Norton and the screen says " You are attempting to install Norton antivirus. However, another Norton product that provides greater protection & increases antivirus functionally is already installed on your computer. If you continue with installing Norton antivirus, the other program will be uninstalled automatically"
I've been at this for days- an hour or two at a shot. Is there some kind soul out there who will help?
Symantec offers Norton Internet Security, Norton Antivirus and Norton 360. It sounds like whatever you purchased online is not the same program that came installed on your PC. Please let us know the names of the programs involved. If Noron Internet Security is installed and you just purchased the Antivirus, you might want to get a refund and then purchase NIS, which has more features, such as a firewall and Identity Safe. The product keys for these programs are not interchangeable. If your purchased product is the same as your pre-installed product, you can activate by merely submitting the new product key via the "Renew" link at the bottom of the main window. If they are not the same products you would either have to uninstall the current program and install the new, or obtain a refund and purchase a new key that matches the program that is already on your PC. Let us know what the situation is, what program you want, and we can advise you on the steps you need to take.
OK- I guess Norton Internet Security came with the laptop, but I got bamboozled into buying Norton Antivirus. I've paid for the advertised pop up warning - the antivirus, but haven't installed it yet. What I want is the protection that came with the laptop- Norton Internet. Found the Norton page that says "request a refund". It doesn't work. I just want to switch one for the other.

Unfortuantely Norton is not set up to allow a swap like that but you should have no problem in getting money refunded for the NAV and buying a copy of NIS 2011 (especially with it being on sale in the stores these days)
It would seem that you effectively bought NAV from the Norton on line store and so this seems to fit you perfectly:
which puts you onto an online CHAT session -- just explain how you purchased the wrong version -- NAV -- since you machine came witha trial NIS on it and that you want to get the refund to your credit card so you can buy NIS (buy in a store if you can but we will give you a more uptodate link than the version on retail CDs.)
Just decide whether you will want a 1 PC or a 3 PC version of NIS 2011 since tehre is about $10 difference in the price -- well worht it if you have more than one PC in the family.
Would you be kind enough to indicate what the route was -- just a refund so you could buy a copy of NIS from where you wanted or a new KEY and download of NIS ?
It will help others to know how Customer Support is handling this kind of situation.
Sorry I was not clear -- I meant what was it that they did to solve the problem! Have you ended up with being switched to NIS or with NAV which was already on the machine being renewed?
