OnlineFamily.Norton Blocking All http/https Activity

Hello,

I'm having an issue with OnlineFamily.Norton. The service is blocking ALL http/https activity, even on unmonitored accounts. If I stop the service (i.e. 'net stop nof') web browsing resumes. If I reinstall, it will function for a little while then stop working again. What can i do to correct this?

Hi wvoyek,

1. Do  you have all of the site categories checked to be blocked under Settings -> Web?

2. What type of Operating System and version do you have?

3. What type of Web Browser and version do you use?

4. What kind of Anti-Virus or Security product do you have?

Thanks,

Katie

1. No not all site categories are checked. Also, this is happening with all accounts on the computer.

2.  Windows XP Professional SP3

3. It happens with all browsers on the computer:

Firefox 3.5.2
Internet Explorer 8.0.6001.18702
Google Chrome 2.0.172.43
Safari 4.0.3

4.  Avast! 4.8

wvoyek,

Avast is currently incompatible with the Norton Safety Minder and we are working to resolve a solution.  If you like to know a little more about Avast, here is another thread on Avast and please read the following link.

Thanks,

Katie

Katie, thanks for your quick reply.

If Avast is incompatiable and it is something you are aware of then why isn't it listed here:

http://www.symantec.com/norton/support/kb/web_view.jsp?wv_type=public_web&docurl=20090508145137EN&lg=en&seg=hho&ct=us&pvid=nof_1&selected_nav=5

At the bottom of that page it says:

"If a program is not listed, then it indicates that we do not have any incompatibility reported"

That clearly is not true.  You guys should probably update that page to reflect the problems with Avast. I checked that page before I posted here and since I didn't see it listed I assumed that there must be another issue.

Do you have an ETA on when the issues with Avast will be resolved?

wvoyek,

We appreciate your valuable feedback.  At present,  users who upgrade from Microsoft Service Pack 2 to Service Pack 3 are reporting that Norton Safety Minder is compatible with Avast.  We are currently investigating why the two products are not compatible on Service Pack 2. I hope this explains why Avast has not been added to the incompatibility list. We'll give you an update as soon as we have a more accurate ETA for the issue.

Katie,

I am using Avast with Windows XP Service Pack 3. I am not on SP2.

wvoyek,

Our QA team has done some testing with Avast installed on Window XP Service Pack 3 and  has been able to surf on the internet.  To reproduce the issue that you are experiencing, so we can address it, please provide us with the following information.

1.       What version of Norton Safety Minder is installed on  your PC?

2.       What is the full name of the Avast product and version number?

3.       If you disable the Avast product, are you able to surf on the internet?

Thanks,

Katie

1. 1.1.0.21

2. Avast! Version Info:

avast! Version Info

3.  If I stop the Web Shield but leave all other providers running i am able to browse the web with Norton Safety Minder running.
