Norton Internet Security 2012
I know this has been requested many times previously but please may I ask again for an option to enable or disable Quick Scans that run automatically or when Automatic LiveUpdate has completed. Yes, I have read why these scans cannot be currently disabled.
Because these scans can be resource intensive the user has to take alternative steps to prevent them from interferring with normal activity by turning off LiveUpdate completely and having Windows Task Scheduler activate it instead. Then it would be necessary to schedule Quick Scans via Windows Task Scheduler so that scans take place at times suited to the user and not in Idle Time which can freeze the computer on systems with older motherboards.
The importance of putting the user in control when Automatic LiveUpdate / Automatic scans bring Windows to a grinding halt cannot be over emphasised. Automatic scans in an ideal world are best run when updates have been applied but not at the expense of interfering with user activity. Idle Time scans will never solve this issue on systems running many programs or systems with low resources, and having to find a program or programs to add to the Silent Mode settings to stop this activity is quite rediculous when one simple option would solve it.
The current Norton Scheduler is also totally inadequate. Scan scheduling must have an option to be able to schedule a Quick Scan or start LiveUpdate at startup if required and the ability to delay a scan or update or repeat it. At this point I should mention that delaying the start of any program in Performance / Startup Manager will remove any Windows Schedule parameters that have been set (such as /lu or /quick) which then in effect renders the whole scheduling system established by Microsoft worthless.
For anyone that is interested much of my research is documented here.
..... there does appear to be a serious flaw within the Norton configuration settings that determine how scheduled scans are run.
Yes I agree i like Norton Antivirus but this idle scans are going to force me to look for another antivirus after being a cutomer for years with Norton Antivirus these idle scans or scans right after a update is driving me nuts bringing my system to a complete halt while norton is doing whatever they want with my system while i have a customer waiting for an invoice i cannot print.
I *knew* I wasn't the only user who felt that way. Thanks for speaking up. (Maybe if we start openly discussing competing software on this forum, as "solutions" to this problem, Norton will actually listen... for example, I'm thinking of going back to the big K when my subscription here is up. Any thoughts?) ;p

When you do make your change be sure to run the Norton Removal Tool
www.Norton.com/nrt
before you attempt to install your new choice of security software.
Stay well and surf safe
...maybe the "hidden message" was too well hidden: it is still the *hope* that Norton will actually listen to us, so that we do not have to use a competing product.
By the way, have you (Dick) read The Hobbit recently? There's this fun little way he uses "good day!" to mean a variety of things, including "thank you for coming, now go away". I know you would never be so impolite as to say it straight out, but your continued reminders to run the removal tool and then to surf safe are rather reminiscent of Bilbo's "good day". ;p
(I don't mean any offense, of course, and I know that you don't either--the comparison just struck me, and I though you might appreciate it.) ;p
Comparison noted.
The thought behind my messages is that I cannot change your mind if you do elect to change products. I just want you to have a good start with the new product and not think that Norton is still trying to crash your system because you left the family. Active security scanning software needs to be exclusive on a system. Some may run in parllel for a time but when threats appear the possibilities for serious problems is almost certain.
I'm happy where I am and I'd hope that you are happy where you are. As I also say
We'll be here when you need us
