Outlook 2003 fails send/receive with error code 0X80042108

I’ve been having problems with this error for several weeks.  I can send/receive email if I disable AntiSpam and Email Scanning in NIS 2009.  The second either of these is re-enabled this error occurs.  I can’t seem to find any threads that speak to this problem so any help would be appreciated.  LiveUpdate is on and functioning and Windows updates are automatic and current.  Outlook 2003 build11.8217.8221 SP3 and NIS 2009 16.5.0.135.  I’ve run Malawarebyte’s Anti-Malware several times and after cleaning out some minor junk the first time everything has been clean since.

Hi

What ISP are you using and what ports do they use for email?

RoadRunner.  No, they do not use SSL and I’ve not made any port changes.  I’ve created a new profile using Outlook in Safe Mode and in ‘normal’ mode and the new profile behaves in exactly the same manner.  The issue is AntiSpam and Email scanning.  Nothing except turning those off permits Outlook to send/receive successfully.  I’m on the verge of dumping Windows in favor of Mac.  Troubleshooting these kinds of issues is a ridiculous waste of my time.

Hi mburks,

If you can confirm that you are using a POP3 or SMTP protocol, then could you check this?

Open the main Norton interface > Internet Settings > Email Scan > Configure.

Be sure "Protect against timeouts" is checked.

Thanks.

Yes, Pop3 and SMTP.  Protect against timeouts is already checked.

Have you tried to reintegrate Norton with Outlook?

1. Close Microsoft Outlook and then open the main Norton interface.
2. Go to Internet Settings.
3. Under Internet Settings, be sure AntiSpam is On.
4. Go to Client Integration and click Configure.
5. Under Email Clients, uncheck Outlook.
6. Click Apply and OK your way out.
7. Restart the computer.

8. After the computer restarts, repeat lines 1 to 4.
9. Now, under Email Clients, check Outlook.
10. Click Apply and OK your way out.
11. Restart the computer.

Let us know.

Reintegration did not fix the problem.  I should also say that I’ve done Detect and Repair in Outlook twice.  There doesn’t seem to be anything comparable in NIS.

Are you per chance using Microsoft Office Outlook Connector

Outlook Connector was installed at one time.  It was deleted sometime before this issue arose.  From a timing perspective, this issue reared it’s ugly head well after it was uninstalled.  However, I know that things from Microsoft don’t always properly uninstall so if you have a suggestion, I would appreciate hearing it.

I seem to have 'fixed' this problem.  The last message from dbrisendine got me looking for remnants of Outlook Connector.  I found 'Exchange Extension Property Pages' in Add-In Manager under Tools/Options/Advanced.  It has to do with MAPI which I don't need but MAPI is used as part of the Outlook Connector, I believe.  Once I turned that off email started working mostly correctly.  I still have a different problem but at least email comes and goes as expected.  I'm confused as to why this seemed to fix the problem since I've noticed this Add-In previously when email was working correctly.  So I'm not yet 100% satisfied this fixes the problem 'permanently' but at least it appears to for now.

I installed MS Live thinking it might be nice to add it to my PC.  Little did I know that Live would cause so many problems either directly or indirectly.
