Norton Parental Control in NIS 2009 no longer works on my computer. What gives?
I am not using Norton Online Family protection, but the old version which is integrated on my computer. I have seen declines in product functionality for quite some time now. My OS is Windows Vista Home Premium and I have created six user accounts. One account was set up as a Child account and one account (which had no password protection to it) was set up as Completely Restricted.
A couple of months ago, sites with sexual content were no longer shielded on the Child account. I changed the child account to allow only Permitted Sites (which is unduly restrictive, but effectively blocked the sites with sexual content). A couple of days ago, I was on the account which was set up with no password protection and established with Completely Restricted parental controls. When I logged into that account, I was notified that some software that was installed for that account had a new version available. That suggested to me that the account was able to check the internet. So I launched Firefox and Internet Explorer. Both of those were finding pages on the internet.
Before I could address the issue, my son found out that with his Child account he was able to access pages with inappropriate content. So, both the account which was Completely Restricted and the Child account which was set up to allow only Permitted Sites are both allowing unfiltered access to the internet.
I am rather steamed about this turn of events. I now have to look for software which will reliably protect my family. Note that I have used Norton products since 2001. I have placed my trust in Norton and now wonder if that trust has always been misplaced.
