I have been trying to figure this out for a few weeks now but have had no luck...
I have various Macs that I am trying to connect to via PC Anywhere 12.1 from a computer running XP Pro. The cross platform version installs fine on the Macs, however, I cannot find an option to have them wait for a connection like the Windows does where it puts the host service in the tray at startup. I have found that the Cross Platform uses "ThinHost" for the same purpose, but it appears to have to be manually launched from PC Anywhere. Ultimately, I am trying to have it so that when a user on the domain logs in to the Mac, ThinHost will start, but not the PC Anywhere application, and when ThinHost starts it will hide automatically so that the users cannot interact with the GUI and end the host.
I have just started to learn some Unix and the directories and have gotten as far as finding ThinHost: /usr/local/lib/pcAnywhere/ThinHost
I have just taken that and experimented a little with Automator, but have had no success in achieving my ultimate goal.
Does anyone have any suggestions?
hi again-
Just wanted to let you know that my contact with the PCAnywhere team is off today but will be back in the office on Monday. Hopefully we can get you an answer early next week!
thanks,
mike
Thanks for helping me to find an answer Mike!
I think one way to do so is to add the .plist file of pcAnywhere to LauchDaemons directory (/System/Library/LaunchDaemons).
I am not sure about the plist file of pcAnywhere CrossPlatform. Can anybody from Symantec provide more info?

Vinod,
That is on the right track, however, PCAnywhere opens just to the area where you can launch the host waiting for a connection. Essentialy, I want to cut out the middle man and just open the host. Unfortunately though the host just launches via a unix executable and I can't seem to find a .plist file for it.
Thanks though :)
hi!
sorry about the delay--I got in touch with the PC Anywhere team and have some information for ya.
The short answer to the story is that the “ThinHost” that pcA uses as its host agent for Mac and Unix platforms (which is literally greatly reduced in size/function from the full Windows host), functions in some areas quite differently than the full host.
There is definitely a way to have the host wait for an incoming connection at startup without having to manually launch it each time, but pcA does rely on the OS for this rather than presenting as an option within the host UI.
I actually have a document that explains these steps posted here: LINK
Hope this helps!

Thanks Mike!
That file you linked was very helpful! It was for an older version of OS X so typing "/" to bring up the "Go To Folder" box did not work, however, I played with Finder and went to the folder and drag-and-dropped the ThinHost file right into the "Browse" window for adding the login items. Now I can just use Automator to write other startup items to hide ThinHost from the user and to close Terminal that opens when ThinHost starts up and it should be an effective solution for the time being!
If there is a way to launch it prior to actually logging in so that PCAnywhere can be used when switching users/when there is no user logged in, then I would gladly put that to use as well :)
hi!
thanks for posting this. I'm actually not the product manager for this product--but I know who is! I will get him on the horn.
thanks,
mike
