I am getting a popup from PC Tools Registry Mechanic. In searching for an answer to my question I see that:
1) Norton owns that program
2) I probably downloaded it at some point.
Question is: Should I be concerned that the message says I have 1964 Registry errors, some of them High Priority. I do experience computer glitches now and then, but it seems I've gotten used to it. Some of it has to do with a very slow and seemingly unstable Internet connection through my cell phone.
I am fearful of turning something loose on my computer to "repair" it. What are the dangers of doing so, other than spending another $30? What might be the disadvantages of not doing so?
Is P C Tools Registry Mechanic ok to use with Norton products like System Works 12 Standard and Antivirus part if I would just open up the program when I want to use it?
If you do not want, you can safely uninstall it using Add/Remove Programs in the Control Panel.
I would suggest you to be careful of the registry keys irrespective of the Registry Cleaner you use. It's hard to fix the registry unless you have a backup. So always keep a backup of the registry before you try any registry cleaner program. Always re-check the entries before you fix those, or confirm with the support before you do so.
Correct, I am using Norton 360. The solution for me, from your cautions, is to leave it alone. I can put up with a somewhat slow computer. I am not rushing off to do something more important anyway.
Well, I guess that was 'caution to the wind'. I found and clicked on the Registry Cleanup and it scanned and deleted files automatically, about one hundred some. We'll see what happens.
I was under the impression that everything on Norton ran automatically. Is that not the case? If not, can you give some advice on what I need to do manually?
Norton may not do Registry Cleanup automatically on account of the risks involved, as mentioned by the others. That said, in my experience with Norton Utilities/SystemWorks/360 over many, many years, you're as safe as you can be if you run that through Norton. But I wouldn't see any need to run it unless you're experiencing symptoms (like the unusually slow computer speeds that brought you here) or have some specific reason to think it might need to be run (like having had someone in your family just delete an application rather than uninstalling it.
