Persistent BOSD While Running Norton 360

I need some help.  I have had Norton for several years, and have it installed on three computers in my home.  The only one on which it is currently working is the one running Windows 8.  The Norton 360 upgrade happened to the other two computers (Dell, 3 years old, running Windows 7:)  issues with both.  We reversed the install on one computer; uninstalled and reinstalled the new version on the other. It is the latter computer that is currently having the issue; the other is only working because we are not updating the software...not a good solution.  Following the upgrade/reinstall I immediately began getting Blue Screens of Death.  I was unable to attempt any of the troubleshooting options suggested online (checking drivers, uninstalling recently added software, etc.) for the type of BOSD I was receiving (ntoskrnl.exe), without a BOSD, as long as Norton was running.  I uninstalled Norton and was able to perform the fixes.  I reinstalled Norton; all was well until Java needed updating...BOSD.  Every time I went to a web page with Java, BOSD.  Had to uninstall Norton in order to install Java.  Reinstalled Norton.  All was well for a day, then BOSD.  Uninstall:  more fixes.  Turned off all automatic updates except Norton; fixed drivers, checked memory:  all the things suggested for the type of BOSD being received.  Reinstalled Norton.  All went well for a week...then BOSD for no apparent reason.  Then another, and then 15 in a row today during a BIG presentation.  No new software, no new hardware, not even an internet connection.  As long as the computer is not running Norton, there are no issues.  As soon as I install Norton, BOSD's start again.  I MUCH prefer the Norton product, but have finally uninstalled it and replaced it with McAfee until I can find the fix.  Has anyone had similar experiences?  Does anyone have any suggestions?  I'd really rather not go to the Geek Squad if I can avoid it...  With thanks in advance for any help possible.
