"please insert the recovery disk" with Norton ghost 15

as have many others, I have had the following happen:

perform cold backup, restore backup to larger HD, almost done and  "please insert the recovery disk" displays.  Insert recovery disk for computer, same error, insert OS disk for computer, no success.  assume disk error on part of disk with backup on it.  repeat steps above.  several times.

then i read in the forums how this happens often and decide to ignore the warnings and attempt boot from new HD.  computer loads a few drivers then re-boots and everything is peachy.  except the feeling that something is not right and the computer is just waiting for the worst possible time to malfunction.

What remedy does the company offer for a customer that has purchased this product?

when this fix is ready will we be able to download some type of file to merge with our original Ghost v15 disk image?

I have the same problem trying to restore to a larger HD in a customer's laptop. Unfortunately, ignoring the error message doesn't work for me. The final error message I get is something about a missing drivers database (I think). Restarting the laptop just shows a blinking underline in the upper left corner of the screen.

Is the problem with Ghost 15's Recovery CD, or Ghost 15's program. Any chance Ghost 14 can restore a Ghost 15 image?

I need to get the laptop back to the customer.

I have had the same issue as above. However, I am restoring to a larger hard drive. When I get the error message"please insert the recovery disk" I reboot. Upon OS startup, WIndows resumes as expected but the destination drive is now the same size as my backup drive was. Is this a known related problem, or does the program just not get to the resize function?

Tim,

You have to click Edit and delete the "intended" partition. Then you can choose the size of your intended partition on the new HD. I always click Edit as it gives you more options.

I fixed the boot problem by using a Paragon Recovery Disk and choosing their fix boot errors option. Worked great. Too bad Ghost can't do it right.

I read elsewhere on the forum that there was a fix that (I think) was for getting a restored drive to boot under Windows 7 (I'm using Windows XP). I ran Live Update for Ghost and it found a newer version. Good luck getting your version updated. It took Symantec Live Chat 2 hours of "dailing in" to my computer to fix the mess of trying to upgrade and I'm left with the outdated version. No way, no how was VProTray.exe going to die to allow the upgrade to succeed.

Ghost 14 failed me when it wouldn't restore an image from a network drive. Ghost 15 failed me when a restored drive wouldn't boot. What good is a backup program if it can't restore properly?

No good at all.

This interests me as I've restored thousands of images using most of the common imaging apps and I'm yet to see a failed restore. Care to describe what happened?

What products do you have the most success with?

None have failed me.

Surely there is one you prefer?

We have seven computers. Old and new. Ghost is installed in three and it isn't appropriate in this forum to name the apps I use in the other computers.

I have 3 test desktops and 2 test laptops and Ghost has always been the backup solution of choice - it has never failed me and I back up and restore operating systems and large volumes of data several times a month as part of testing regimes.

The "recent" release of Ghost 15 with its many new features made Ghost an even more attractive solution for users wanting a very effective and reliable solution to their backup needs.

HI Everyone,

I have been using Ghost for about the last 10 years and it has never failed me once.

There are a combination of things which result in failure to restore, particularly when it comes to the system drive.

1) Not understanding the original partition layout of the source drive.

2) Failing to backup and/or restore hidden partitions which is almost always present on OEM computers.

3) Not selecting the correct options during restore, things such as resize, restore MBR, etc.

4) Restoring partitions in the wrong order. Yes sometimes this matters.

5) Booting up after a restore with both the original source drive and the new drive both present at the same time.

6) Backing up to unreliable media such as DVD.

7) Bugs in Ghost.

I'm probably forgetting some as I've been heavily involved in the forums here for a long time and I've seen it all so to speak. But it is hard to remember them all off the top of my head. :smileywink: Brian has seen even more.

But to keep all this in perspective, let's remember that forums like this are where people come when they are having problems. The vast majority of problems reported here over time have been due to other problems besides Ghost. But Ghost has definitely had bugs, no denying it.

What you don't see represented in the forums here are the vast majority of users who do NOT have problems - they simply don't come here because there is no reason. Hundreds of thousands if not more are people who use Ghost without problems of any kind.

This thread represents a real problem but it does not affect all users though it is easy to think otherwise given the volume of posts in this and related threads.

Ghost has saved my bacon (so to speak) on many occasions and I am convinced it is a great product or I would not still be using it.

There are bugs but the vast majority of problems do not prevent the ability to restore your system and the ones which do affect a very small percentage of the overall Ghost population. Of course I know this does not help those who do have problems feel better. :smileysad:

My two cents worth.:smileywink:

So regarding the original poster's complaint about a bug, this hasn't been fixed in SP1, has it?  Installed SP1, recreated a SRD and still have the same problem.  It only seems to do it on XP images and only on our Dell Precision T3400.

One thing to note is that when going through the wizard, the Recovery Anywhere option is checked but grey so can't uncheck the box (it IS unchecked when attempting to restore a Windows Vista SP1 64-bit and Windows 7 image, however).  This is despite the restore being performed on the exact same PC it was created on.  Cancelling the "Insert Recovery drivers disc" dialog is fine and Windows boots, however, it reinstalls the driver for the network card (because it was stripped out by Ghost 15) which has the effect of wiping the already-existing IP settings, which is not ideal at all.

Unfortunately, this means I have to go back to the boot disc created from Ghost 2003 just for our XP images (thank God I still have backup images compatible with Ghost 2003).

PCs affected are a pair of Dell Precision T3400, Core2Duo 2.66GHz, 2GB RAM, NVIDIA Quadro NVS 290 using a clean install of XP Home and XP Professional with Service Pack 3 installed, NVIDIA drivers version 197.28, F-Secure Client Security 8.02.

Images created from SRD with Medium Compression, Verify Recovery Point and split at 3857MB options set only (although the images generated are actually little bigger than 2GB).  When restoring image, only options set are Verify Recovery Point, Set Drive Active and Restore Original Disk Signature.

Is there any word on the progress of fixing this?

Cecil,

Fascinating observations. Unfortunately I can't help.

Very interesting, I had the similar experiance on a restore where the "restore anywhere" box was checked and greyed out.

I could not uncheck the box and restoring the image did indeed run sysprep and on first boot it went into a mini-setup.

I never got the error about inserting the recovery disk, but I still have that image that cannot be restored without it getting syspreped. (the system is also XP)

It's also interesting how you mention a restore "stripping out" or not restoring a driver.

I saw someone else mention it on another forum and it seemed very odd.  When Ghost is almost finished with a restore, it says it's "scanning" the system for certain things and why would it need to be doing that?

If it was really doing a sector by sector image and restore, it would have no reason to have to go back and scan or cleanup anything and it shouldn't leave out any drivers that were installed on the original system?

Dave

So is there any word on whether the problem with the WinPE installation is solved and how will Ghost users get this?
