Hi,
NIS2012 removes portable profile support - which was a very unpleasant, and unexpected consequence of upgrading from NIS2011 to NIS2012. It essentially offers to "convert" a portable profile, and in the process , without clear warning, removes that data from the USB stick! I was very distressed by this change since the portable profiles were a very simple and valuable capability for me.
The on-line vault, which appears to be offered as a substitute, is not equivalent in terms of either simplicity or the sense of
physical assurance. The on-line vault system is not yet proven and involves a very different security and trust model.
It would be far better to offer the on-line vault as a new option for managing logins, not as a forced replacement for portable profiles. That way people can choose if and when to migrate from using portable profiles to using the cloud-based IDSafe vault system when they are comfortable that the new system is reliable, meets their operational and security needs, and is consistent with their trust model.
Please restore the portable profiles to NIS2012. I also suggest that until this is done, that before people attempt to upgrade from NIS2011 to NIS2012 (that is, before the upgrade downloads and before the install starts ) they are fully informed that support for portable profiles has vanished - with a confirmation required before continuing.
From a documentation standpoint, it would also be helpful to point out that the Norton Account, which can hold a maximum of one online IDSafe vault, does not need to be an installation related Norton Account. Since one needs a separate Norton Account for each IDSafe vault, on the surface it appears that there are serious constraints as to the number of vaults one can use in association with the same computer or set of computers using a multi-pack installation of NIS. Even a chat support employee was confused about this point, and did not seem to understand one can create multiple Norton Accounts (each to hold one vault) from the same computer. That is, it appeared that the number of vaults could never be more than the number of Norton Installation associated accounts - thus causing problems when the number of individuals using computers exceeds the number of Norton licenses.
Thanks,
