Today I went to upgrade from Norton 360 Deluxe to Norton 360 with LifeLock Ultimate Plus. I initially attempted to do this via chat using AI. This did not work, so I went with a live person to chat with. We discussed upgrading the subscription and costs. I asked to be upgraded, but then the person came back and said I needed to call XXXXXXXXXX and provide them with my case number (XXXXXXXX). The first time I called the number I was connected to AI and it asked if I wanted to simultaneously see the discussion via text or URL. I said yes. There was a pause and then something along the lines of “I didn’t hear a response, we will continue without”. Then what can I help you with. Obviously my voice was not being heard. I hung up, tried again, same thing. I rebooted my phone, same thing. I called my wife, she could hear me. I tried again, and this time Norton AI heard me. Didn’t go to far before I asked to talk to a person. I gave her the case number and explained what I wanted to do….upgrade from 360 Deluxe to 360 LifeLock Ultimate Plus. 360 LifeLock Ultimate Plus can be had on the internet for $299.99 ( copy/paste:us.norton.com/products/norton-360-lifelock-ultimate-plus?inid=support-footer_norton.com-norton_360_with_lifelock_ultimate_plus) for the first year. My subscription to 360 Deluxe ends in April. Norton wanted to charge me an additional $40+ dollars to upgrade my current subscription to LifeLock Ultimate Plus from now until April, then charge me the full $364.99 for 360 LifeLock Ultimate Plus for the next subscription year. You see the issue….$40 + 364.99 = $404.99 as compared to actually upgrading from 360 Deluxe to 360 LifeLock Ultimate Plus for the internet advertised (1yr) price of $299.99 and maybe the $40 extra to cover Ultimate Plus to the end of my current subscription. We went back and forth to no avail. I asked if I cancelled my 360 Deluxe subscription today, would I get a rebate…no. So I cancelled the auto renewal on my subscription, will not renew the 360 Deluxe subscription in April. I will now have to do my due diligence and look at other companies. So irritating. Don’t know if the issues arise from talking with someone who’s first language isn’t English, or if it is Norton just trying to wring every last nickel from their customers…as they do with all the add-ons. Ultimate Utilities, Driver Updater, etc.

It sounds incredibly frustrating to deal with technical glitches only to be met with a pricing structure that feels like it’s penalizing your loyalty. The scenario you described—being charged a pro-rated fee to upgrade for a few months and then being hit with a high renewal rate—is a common point of contention with Norton’s subscription model.
Here is a breakdown of why this happens and how their current policies align with your experience:
The “New Customer” vs. “Renewal” Gap
Introductory Pricing: The $299.99 price you saw online for Norton 360 with LifeLock Ultimate Plus is an introductory offer for the first year.
Standard Renewal Rate: Norton’s official renewal price for this specific plan is currently $364.99.
The Upgrade Trap: When you upgrade an existing subscription, Norton often treats it as a “pro-rated” change to your current term rather than a “new” purchase, which eventually rolls you into the higher renewal bracket instead of giving you a fresh “first-year” discount.
Cancellation & Refund Reality
Refund Policy: Norton generally offers a 60-day money-back guarantee on annual subscriptions, but this typically applies to the initial purchase or the renewal charge itself. If you are midway through a subscription (like your current Deluxe plan ending in April), they often refuse pro-rated rebates for the remaining months if you cancel early.
Auto-Renewal: By turning off auto-renewal, you’ve taken the most effective step to prevent being charged that $364.99 in April. You will still have access to your Deluxe features until your expiration date.
Common “Workarounds” Used by Customers
Many long-term users avoid these “upgrade” fees by following a specific strategy: Wait for Expiration: Let the current subscription run until 1–2 days before it expires. Purchase as New: Buy the desired plan (like the $299.99 Ultimate Plus) as if they are a completely new customer. New Product Key: Activate the new product key. Note that doing this before your old plan expires usually results in losing any remaining days on the old plan, as they do not “stack” automatically.
If you decide to look elsewhere during your due diligence, popular alternatives with similar identity protection features include Aura (often cited for more transparent, flat-rate pricing) or Identity Guard.
