Popup about activating ransomware protection

I got a pop up earlier today that looked like a Norton Lifelock screen, telling me I don't have ransomware protection enabled, but then asking if I want to activate an Online Backup to protect my files. I have Norton Security Premium, and I didn't have an online backup set up, so I'm guessing this was a legit popup that's part of my Norton program? I didn't click on anything, I just wanted to check it was something that my software would suggest I set up. I couldn't find a 'ransomware protection' setting in Norton Security Premium, but then I figured it might have actually been trying to prompt the setup of the online backup function? If you could let me know if the popup is indeed part of Norton Security Premium, then that would set my mind at rest! I should note, it wasn't a push notification, but when I opened my Norton dashboard, it grouped the dashboard and the pop up window together.

Yes, looks genuine.  It is also written in Norton-speak, easily recognized by users who have seen a few of these promos that are quite vague aside from naming a threat and telling you that Norton will protect you if you enable a certain feature.  It's true that backups are an essential protection against ransomware but the pop-up does not really explain why this is.

Looks genuine to me.

So it is genuine then?

Ransomware is designed to take over your
computer and hold your precious files for
ransom. In addition to protecting your devices
against ransomware. Norton Online Backup
can create and securely store backup versions
of your files - at no extra cost.

Ok got the message again now.

Hopefully have manged to attach the screenshot.

Can anyone help please?

What can I say, I assumed Norton would know what pop ups they'd coded in their product. My mistake in not taking a screenshot.

That said, I set up an online backup via the main dashboard and the pop up hasn't appeared again so can only assume it was a genuine reminder.

Ok. I will try that if it happens again. However I am gong to make a guess here that it is not a legal pop up. If it was I am sure Nortons would have commented and other people would have had it.  So it begs the question ow did it get through the Nortons security?

To determine if this is a legitimate Norton message, you need to post a screenshot of that message so we can be sure one way or the other.

It did not seem to be anything to do with backup. It has not appeared again. Has anyone else had this today? Does anyone from Nortons read this? Or how can I get an answer please.

It would not surprise me if the "ransomware protection" is, in fact, Norton Backup.  Backups are the best insurance against ransomware - if your files get encrypted, you simply remove the ransomware and replace the locked files with the pristine backups.  From a security perspective, there isn't really anything special about ransomware that would set it apart from other malware and require some specific type of protection feature.  But backups guarantee that you can recover your data if your files are held for ransom.
