Ports responding to pings

Ports responding to pings.  I have NIS 2010 on the computer. Now and then I ran ShieldsUp from Gibson Research just to check the security settings of the computer. In previous versions of NIS all ports where reported as Stealth. No ports responded to any ping. This morning I run the test again on NIS 2010 and found 50% reported Stealth but the other 50% as closed. Closed but responding to the pings. NIS 2010 runs on standard settings so that shouldn’t be a problem.

I don’t like this result and wonder if this result is part of the set up of 2010 or?? Do I have to worry about the security of the computer?

Any suggestions what to do, please?

Are you behind a router? If you are, you aren't scanning the Norton firewall at all, but the router ports.

And closed is fine.

Thanks for your respons.

Yes behind a router. The computer used to be directly connected but is now part of a network. Could explain the difference..??

Ah, well, then you aren't scanning the NIS firewall at all. When you are behind a router, any port scan will scan the ports of the router. The scan won't reach your computer, because the router is "in the way".

Being behind a router makes you more secure, because unsolicited traffic will never even reach your computer.

If you do want to test if Norton stealths your ports, you will have to bypass the router and plug the network cable directly into your computer instead (for testing purposes).

Many routers, but not all, can also stealth ports. You will have to check your router configuration for that.

Thanks for your help
