After running Norton Power Eraser as was reccommended by Norton the computer has stopped booting. After running startup repair several times no cause to the problem can be found.
I then attempted to restore thee system to the point before I ran Power Eraser. Still no dice. I'm now running a memory diagnostic. I will edit the post once I get results.
Sometimes a computer might be set up to boot straight from the hard drive, not any external disks (USB, CD-ROM, etc). It depends on what kind of computer you have (Dell, HP, etc.), but usually there’s a key you can press while the manufacturer logo is displayed that will make it display the boot menu (usually F10).
From the boot menu you can usually select the drive that has NBRT and proceed from there
After attempting to boot from CD or DVD (in this case DVD) essentially the same result a flash of a blue screen soon after seeing the windows logo. Then back to the manufacturer's screen.
Okay, blue screen right after the Windows logo might be a hardware problem. Check your memory and disk(s). If that's all clear then ths OS is probably in bad shape. If you've got a restore disk you might try reinstalling Windows.
They are strict like me, and don't like 2 groups working on a machine at one time, I can tell you it gets confusing and frustrating. They are able to do what I do and script etc. to be able to clean a system with advanced tools, even when a PC doesn't boot Windows.
The tool used requires scripts to know what to do. It's designed that way. Hopefully the missing driver, file or registry screw up can be found in the logging what is wrong.
AV's and even specific tools like Norton Power Eraser, TDSSkiller, FixTDSS, Zeroaccess removal tools, and Combofix etc. are causing Windows not to boot after being run, even if it's because of the Tripwire, Subsystems, BCD or MBR.
One thing noticed, whether it's automatic on startup or the user started it, with these infections on non Windows bootable machines, but the System Restore is stuck also.
Why? ... As everything is now erased I doubt that anyone can tell you. But it seems likely that something got past your defenses, which included Norton. This is unfortunate but not unknown and I believe it can happen with any protection software as the threats evolve. You have to stay up to date and stay alert and even then something can get through.
Had you come here before the reformat and reload there are some very knowledgeable people around who may have been able to help. Sadly that does not help now but it is a good reason to have a good backup which hopefully you have, from Norton 360, or elsewhere. However there may be problems in that backup so if you have one and are thinking of restoring to your recovered system you may like to post some details to see if others can offer advice on how to avoid a re-infection.
Dell laptop with Windows 7 was crashing and slow on e-mail and internet. I found that the Norton 360 icon was missing on the toolbar, and was unable to boot the program at all. I reinstalled Norton 360 from Symantec website and a week later Norton was missing again. Reloaded again and ran Power Eraser. Upon restart the computer would not reboot. Went to Dell for answers and they could not get it working. They sent an operating system disc and I had to reformat and reload and lost everything. Why?
